No. 12/13 Spartans Remain Unbeaten with 2-2 Tie Against Oakland
9/26/2023 10:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Michigan State improves to 5-0-3 with the hard-fought draw at home.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Jonathan Stout's header in the 88th minute drew the match even, as the Michigan State men's soccer team tied Oakland, 2-2, at a rain-soaked DeMartin Stadium on Hometown Heroes Night.
With the draw, the Spartans remain unbeaten with a 5-0-3 overall, ending the month of September with a 4-0-3 record. MSU is also unbeaten at home at 3-0-1 and in night games this season at 5-0-1. Despite the effort, Oakland falls to 2-5-2 overall.
"I don't think we're ever happy with a draw, I think with this group, they're always going to battle to the end," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I don't how back and forth it was, I thought we made a couple decisions and mistakes and they capitalized on them to their credit. We had some very good looks on goal, and we missed the pen (penalty kick). I thought we really had a large amount of the possession. To Oakland's credit they battled, they organized defensively, and they got us on two or three opportunities."
Oakland struck first in the 20th minute, when Donovan Philip found Owen Smith for his second goal of the season. Smith slipped the ball past a diving Zac Kelly to put the Golden Grizzlies on top 1-0.
Despite MSU out-shooting Oakland, 6-2, in the first half, OU remained on top at the end of the first half.
In the 49th minute, the Spartans looked to tie the score when they earned a foul in the box and a penalty kick, but Sean Kerrigan's penalty kick attempt was stopped by Oakland keeper Michael Sly Jr. to keep OU on top.
Michigan State maintained possession for much of the second half, but couldn't break through. Sophomore forward Jake Spadafora found the equalizer in the 72nd minute. Spadafora picked off an Oakland defender and beat Sly Jr. in a one-on-one battle. The goal was the sophomore's second of the season.
The game didn't stay tied for long with OU re-taking the lead nearly 70 seconds later, when Mohammad Hamoud found Andrew Darakdjian for his second goal of the year and a 2-1 lead for the visitors in the 73rd minute.
All was not lost for Michigan State with sophomore forward Jonathan Stout in the game. In the 88th minute, Stout risked a blow to the face from the boot of an Oakland player to get his head on the ball of a corner, to tie the game for good at 2-all. The goal was Stouts second of the season.
For the game, MSU out-shot OU, 18-6, leading in corner kicks, 10-2.
The Spartans conclude their three-game homestand at DeMartin Stadium against No. 25 Penn State in the second half of doubleheader with the MSU women who also face nationally-ranked PSU. The men's game will kick off at 3 p.m.
