Women's Soccer Welcomes Maryland Thursday Night

EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Michigan State women's soccer (7-2-2, 2-0-1 B1G) returns home on Thursday, Sept. 28 to face Maryland (3-3-5, 0-2-1 B1G) at 7 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium.

FIRST TOUCH
MSU enters Thursday's match at 7-2-2 (2-0-1 B1G) after securing a pair of road wins last weekend, defeating Minnesota, 3-1, on Sept. 21 before knocking off Wisconsin, 1-0, on Sept. 24. Emerson Sargeant, Justina Gaynor and Gabby Mueller scored goals in MSU's win at Minnesota, while freshman phenom Bella Najera scored the game-winner against Wisconsin for the Spartans' first victory in Madison since Sept. 26, 1999. Sargeant and Najera both earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors for their performances last weekend, with Sargeant earning her first career Offensive Player of the Week award and Najera collecting her second-straight Freshman of the Week nod. Najera ranks first on the team in points (11) and goals (5) this season.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
The Terrapins are led by second-year head coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer, who holds a 7-11-10 record during her time in College Park. Maryland enters Thursday's match at 3-3-5 (0-2-1 B1G) and will look to secure its first conference win of the season after dropping its most recent contest, 1-0, at home against Ohio State on Sept. 24.
The Terrapins are led in points (6) and goals (3) by sophomore midfielder Ava Morales. Maryland goalkeeper Liz Beardsley has played every minute in goal this season for the Terrapins and posts a 0.756 save percentage and 1.00 goals-against average. Rookie defender Kennedy Bell was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 5 this season.

Current Spartans Celia Gaynor, Zivana Labovic and Maggie Illig recorded goals in last season's contest. MSU last fell to Maryland in a 1-0 contest on Oct. 24, 2019, at home.
