SPARTANS BACK AT HOME
The Spartans started the season with a 3-1 victory over Boston University. The star of the show was Emma O'Neill, who netted all three goals. With her three-goal performance, O'Neill was the first Spartan to receive Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week since 2016. MSU dropped its last two contests against New Hampshire (4-0) and a tight contested battle against Kent State (1-0). MSU had a winning record at home during the 2022 season going 5-4. In the four losses each game was decided two or fewer goals.
WHO TO WATCH
Celina Riccardo looks to make her 70th career start for the Spartans. Appearing in all 71 games in her career, Riccardo will be making her 62nd consecutive start. O'Neill and Riccardo have been aggressive towards the net through three games, combining for half of the team's shots. MSU has been switching goalie duties throughout the first three games. Sophomore Cecily Charles and freshmen Lyra Gavino each made their first career starts in goal.
ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY
Saint Joseph's is ranked 10th in the country according to National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The back-to-back Atlantic 10 champions are looking to capture its seventh conference championship in the last eight years. The Hawks are returning the league's last two Offensive Players of the Year in Manu Ghigliotti (2021) and Lily Santi (2022). Ghigliotti is starting the season hot coming in averaging 3.50 points per game that marks 5th best in the country. Saint Joseph's is led by Hannah Prince who is coming of a stellar first year at the helm. Posting a 16-5 record, Price guided SJU to its highest ranking in program history last season at #9. The Hawks season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to eventual champs North Carolina.
