What you need to know about Spartan Hockey

• Michigan State enters its rivalry week against Michigan. This is the most-played (and perhaps most passionate) rivalry in college hockey - the teams will play games 343 and 344 this weekend. The Wolverines own a 179-139-24 edge in the series all-time. The Spartans own a 70-55-12 mark in games contested in East Lansing, and are 47-85-5 in Ann Arbor. Three of the four games played between the rivals last season were one-goal affairs. MSU won 2-1 at home, Michigan had 2-1 and 4-2 wins at Yost, and Michigan won a 4-3 affair at LCA with 0.6 seconds remaining in OT.
• MSU most recently posted a sweep at Penn State, 5-0 and 7-3 - its first road sweep at Pegula Ice Arena in program history. The Spartans are unbeaten in their last six (5-0-1), and have not lost a regulation game since Oct. 27 at Boston College (10-1-3, with the loss in OT at Minnesota). With 15 victories, MSU has more total wins than in 9 of its last 11 seasons.
• Artyom Levshunov is the B1G second Star of the Week. He exploded with a five-point weekend at PSU (1-4-5), with a four-point effort in the Saturday win. Levshunov averages more than a point per game (6-18-24) and is tied for sixth in the Big Ten in points. Levshunov is MSU's top-scoring freshman defenseman since current Red Wings blueliner Jeff Petry had a 3-21-24 scoring line in the 2009-10 season, and behind AJ Thelen's 11-18-29 in 2003-04.
• The line of Gavin O'Connell-Red Savage-Joey Larson produced 10 points last weekend (six goals) and has 32-34-66 in 22 games. Larson produced 3-1-4 at PSU, pushing him to a total of 14 goals on the season (fourth B1G/eighth nationally). His 14-12-26 scoring line leads MSU while his seven power play markers is atop the B1G and fifth nationally. Savage had a three-point effort in State College and has a career-best 8-15-23 scoring line, which is career bests in all categories. Meanwhile, O'Connell is second on the team in goals (10, T-10th B1G) with seven assists.
• The veteran line of Reed Lebster-Nicolas Müller-Jeremy Davidson features the three oldest forwards on the roster. They have combined to play 402 collegiate hockey games at MSU and UMass. Lebster is coming off his best offensive weekend in Green and White, scoring once in each game and adding an assist. He now owns a 5-7-12 scoring line (+9) in 19 games. He leads the Big Ten with two shorthanded goals (fourth nationally) and he owns one game-winner and one power-play marker. Müller is tied for second among all Spartans with 15 assists and owns a 4-15-19 scoring line (+8).
• Following winning a World Juniors gold medal, Trey Augustine returned to duty with the Spartans to the tune of stopping 58 of 61 shots against in the Penn State series, including a 31-save shutout on Friday in his first game back in Green and White. Augustine owns a .919 save percentage, 2.81 GAA, and 13-3-2 record; he ranks first among B1G netminders in conference contests with a .932 save percentage, two shutouts, and 33.16 saves per game average, and ranks second in GAA (2.38) in conference contests.
