Shooting Woes Hamper Spartans in Road Loss to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS - Michigan State women's basketball fell to Minnesota on the road, 69-50, Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena.
The Spartans slid to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in Big Ten action, while Minnesota improved to 14-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Michigan State had its worst shooting performance of the season going 20-for-61 from the field for 32.8 percent in scoring a season-low points. Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann led the Spartans with 18 points and seven rebounds, as the only Spartan to reach double figures. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault added nine points and eight rebounds for MSU.
Minnesota was led by Mallory Heyer who scored 18 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds.
Both teams came out of the gates hot with the game tied a 10-10 with just under seven minutes left in the period. Minnesota had the hot hand from beyond the arc early, jumping out to an 18-14 advantage, using a 6-0 run. In the fast paced quarter, Minnesota led after the first 10 minutes, 20-18.
In the second quarter, the Spartan offense started cold. Minnesota scored the first five points of the period to take a 25-18 lead. MSU was held off the scoreboard for over three minutes as the Gophers opened up their first double-digit lead at 34-24 with under two minutes left in the half. The Spartans missed their final six shots, heading into the locker room down 36-24. After shooting 47.1 percent from the field in the first quarter, MSU shot only 14.3 percent in the second.
The Gophers scored the first seven points of the second half, before a Theryn Hallock layup stopped the run. Minnesota took its first 20-point lead after a Heyer trey to go up, 46-26. Hagemann led the way with seven points in the third quarter alone.
The Spartans showed fight in the fourth quarter, but the Gopher offense proved to be too much. Minnesota responded with an 8-0 run to put the Gophers back on top 66-44 with 4:43 remaining. The Gophers ended the night 12-for-26 from 3-point range.
Michigan State will now return home for a pair of home games next week. The Spartans host Purdue on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m., before taking on in-state rival Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 27 Noon for Alumni Day.
Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes: at Minnesota
• Michigan State slides to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in B1G action with the loss ... the Spartans are now 2-3 in road games, including 1-3 in B1G road contests.
• MSU's starting five of junior guard DeeDee Hagemann, sophomore guard Abbey Kimball junior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate, graduate guard Moira Joiner and graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault for Wednesday's contest marked the eighth game in a row with that starting line-up and the 15th overall game this season that those five Spartans opened the game on the court ... Michigan State is now 10-5 with that starting line-up.
• The Spartans trailed at halftime for just the third time this season and are now 1-2, after trailing in the loss to Nebraska (43-39 on Dec. 9) and then rallying for the second-half comeback win vs. Maryland (29-22 on Jan. 9)
• MSU was limited to a season-low 50 points, after the previous season-low of 65 points in the 70-65 loss at No. 17/16 Ohio State (1/14/24) ... the Spartans were held under 80 points for just the sixth time this season.
• Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann registered double-figures for the fifth time in the last six games with 18 points Saturday ... Hagemann's 18 points was her most in a B1G game this season and the most since she scored 21 vs. Richmond on Dec. 20 ... with the 18 points, Hagemann logged double-digits for the 12th game overall and the 34th outing of her career, second among active MSU players behind Joiner's 46 double-figure scoring games.
• Hagemann netted multiple 3-pointers for the second-straight game and eighth time this season, finishing with two triples Saturday.
• Hagemann pulled down a season-high seven rebounds, topping her previous season-high of five boards vs. DePaul (11/30/23) and one shy of her career-best of eight rebounds vs. Penn State (2/21/22).
• Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault was one point and two rebounds shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds ... the eight boards gives Ayrault 15 games with five or more rebounds this season, including in 10 of the last 11 outings.
• Ayrault made one 3-pointer, marking the eighth-straight game that she's made at least one from behind the arc and in 12 games this season.
