Wrestling Closes Out Three Dual Homestand Against No. 17 Wisconsin

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team plays host to No. 17-ranked Wisconsin on Friday, Jan. 26. at 7 p.m. inside Jenison Field House. The dual will be streamed on Big Ten Plus. The Spartans will conclude their three-match home stand on Friday night. It will be the fourth-straight match against a Top 20 opponent. Since opening the new year, MSU hasn't done much traveling with five home duals and a short road trip to neighboring Michigan.

ROAD TO 100
With his 19-6 major decision victory over Rutgers's Brian Soldano on Friday night, graduate Layne Malczewski inches closer to the 100 career-victory threshold, sitting at 96 career wins. The Macomb, Michigan, native boasts a 96-45 overall record at MSU, leading all current Spartan wrestlers. The four-time NCAA National Qualifier currently has a 6-5 record this season and is the No. 21-ranked 184-pounder.
B1G TIME TESTS
Senior 165-pounder Caleb Fish has been put through the ringer in one of the toughest weight classes in the country. The Eaton Rapids, Michigan, native enters the week at No. 9 and will face his third top 10 opponent in the last four duals as he takes on Wisconsin's No. 5-ranked Dean Hamiti. Fish defeated Michigan's No. 5-ranked Cameron Amine 6-4 and dropped to Penn State's No. 9-ranked Mitchell Messenbrink 19-8.
SPARTANS MOVING UP
Three Spartans moved up the ranks in the latest InterMat rankings: 141-pound redshirt senior Jordan Hamdan moved up four spots to No. 29 after a 1-1 weekend that was highlighted when he took down No. 11-ranked Mitch Moore from Rutgers 5-1. Fish continues to climb the top 10 ranks slotted at No. 9 and Malczewski nabbed his fourth major decision dual victory against Soldano 19-6 to advance one spot to No. 21.
NEW RANKINGS
The NCAA announced the first coaches' rankings for the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Monday that featured six Spartans in the top 33 of their weight class: Hamdan entered in at No. 32 at 141, Chase Saldate cracks the top 15 in the 157-weight class at No. 14, Fish continues his big year as the highest ranked Spartan on the list at No. 10 at 165-pounds, the veteran Malczewski makes the list at No. 19 at 184, 197-pounder Kael Wisler is listed at No. 26 and the nation's leader in wins, heavyweight Josh Terrill, rounds out the list at No. 28.
KNOW THE FOE: WISCONSIN
Wisconsin is under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Chris Bono. The Badgers enter the week ranked No. 17 with a 6-2 overall record and 0-1 in Big Ten dual action as they dropped their last match-up to No. 7-ranked Ohio State, 27-15. Wisconsin will travel to East Lansing this Friday then will have a quick turnaround and host No. 6 Nebraska on Sunday. It will be the first meeting between the Spartans and the Badgers since February 9, 2020, which went in the favor of MSU, 19-17. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 29-18-2. On an individual basis, five Wisconsin wrestlers are nationally ranked in their respective weight classes according to InterMat, Eric Barnett (No. 3 | 125), Joe Zargo (No. 29 | 149), Dean Hamiti (No. 5 | 165), Max Maylor (No. 12 | 174) and Shane Liegel (No. 16 | 184).
