First time in program history MSU named among nation's top 25 teams
EAST LANSING, Mich. – MSU was slotted No. 24 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Men's Tennis Preseason Rankings, the first time in program history the Spartans have been named inside the top 25 since the ITA began compiling rankings in 1981.
"It's a great honor and it shows there's a lot of respect for the Spartan brand across the nation and we're looking forward to breaking this program record and breaking into the top-15, top-10 and competing for the number one spot in the nation," head coach Harry Jadun said. "It's really good, but we're focused on what we're doing here and not going to get consumed with outside noise."
The ITA Top 25 Coaches Poll is voted on by the ITA National Ranking committee, comprised of 13 ITA Region Chairs - head coaches of D1 teams in their respective regions.
After an 11-14 season in 2023 that saw the Spartans place as high as No. 66 in the ITA top 75, Jadun has rebolstered his lineup with experienced transfers and international signees. The squad backed up their prospect by posting unprecedented program marks during the fall season including a doubles national title.
The only time Michigan State has been selected in the top 40 of the ITA Rankings was at No. 39 during the 2012-13 season, also the only Spartan team to reach the NCAA Tournament. MSU now ranks in the coaches poll top 60 for the first time since Feb. 17, 2015 and the top 50 for the first time since Feb. 4, 2014 – Jadun's All-American playing days as a Spartan.
Also earning top 25 considerations are Big Ten opponents Ohio State (No. 2) and Michigan (No. 14). The Spartans will travel to face the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio on April 13 and will conclude the regular season with a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle the Wolverines on April 20.
Receiving votes but outside the top 25 is Middle Tennessee, who the Spartans will host for an East Lansing dual on Feb. 4 and Illinois, who MSU takes on on the road in Urbana-Champaign, Ill. On March 30.
Upon returning from Boynton Beach, Fla. For the annual week-long preseason training trip, the Spartans will open the season with a double-header in East Lansing on Friday, Jan. 19, taking on Western Michigan at 2 p.m. and Brown at 6 p.m..
