Five Reach Double Figures in MSU’s Road Win over Rutgers, 82-64

Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault led the Spartans with 19 points in the win.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Michigan State used a balanced attack with five players in double figures to defeat Rutgers, 82-64, at Jersey Mike's Arena on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Spartans have now won three-straight games to improve to 16-5 overall and 6-4 in Big Ten action. Rutgers falls to 6-17 overall and 0-10 in league play. MSU has now won three-straight against the Scarlet Knights.
Overall, five Spartans reached double figures in the victory. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault scored 19 points for the second-straight game, adding six rebounds. Sophomore guards Abbey Kimball and Theryn Hallock both scored 16 points for MSU. Graduate guard Moira Joiner added 10 points and tied her career high with six assists, while graduate guard/forward Tory Ozment also scored 10.
Hagemann's seven total assists on the night gives her 384 for her career, closing in on becoming the eighth Spartan women's basketball player with 400 career assists and closing in on the No. 8 spot held by Brittney Thomas (2007-11) with 401 helpers.
Rutgers was led by Destiny Adams, who had a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
Michigan State scored the first eight points of the game, leading to an early Rutgers timeout. After a hot MSU start, the Scarlet Knights caught fire, making six-straight baskets to cut the deficit to 17-14. The Spartans went over two minutes without scoring, as RU took its first lead and only lead 18-17 with less than a minute remaining. Joiner led the way in the first period with eight points.
In the second quarter, Michigan State jumped out to a 34-25 lead after Hallock trey. Fouls were mounting on sides. The Spartans also struggled from the free throw line, going 1-for-8 in the first half. Despite shooting 64 percent from the field in the first half, MSU only shot 13 percent from the charity stripe. Joiner was the only Spartan in double figures in the first half with 10 points.
After a steal, Kimball drained a 3-pointer to give MSU its first double-digit lead of the game, 45-35 early in the third quarter. Michigan State scored 14 of the first 16 points of the third period to stretch its lead to 56-37 after a fastbreak layup by Hallock. A pair of Ayrault free throws gave MSU its first 20-point lead 61-41.
In the second half, the Spartans straightened out their free throw shooting, going 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. Ayrault helped sealed the win for MSU with nine points in the final period.
The Spartans open the month of the regular season, hosting Minnesota on Monday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
