EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2023-24 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.
The first honorees for the 2023-24 season are Greyson Mercer (men's soccer), Tee Muex (men's track and field) and Ellie Wheatley (field hockey).
A senior forward Heber City, Utah, Mercer played in every game for the Spartans this season. He owns a 3.52 grade-point average as a supply chain management major and was named to the fall Academic All-Big Ten Team.
"Greyson puts forth extraordinary effort in and outside of the classroom, and continuously holds himself and his team to a high standard," said SASS Associate Director Jeremy Flynn. "His positive enthusiasm is a catalyst to those around him.
"Despite a heavy travel schedule, he has done an awesome job with staying on top of his academics and communicating with his professors and our academic team."
Muex, a junior from Flint, has a 3.16 GPA in advertising management.
"Tee has exhibited hard work in the classroom since he stepped on campus at Michigan State," said Academic Coordinator Kyle Williams. "Tee is constantly ahead of the curve and loves to come in and get work done in the early hours, taking the time to be on time to do everything that is required of him. Tee knows the value of communication and time management at the college level."
Wheatley has been heavily involved in the community, volunteering her time at the Red Cross Blood Drive, the Teams for Toys wrapping party, the student-athlete food drive, Operations Christmas Child and the "Be the Match" promotion. A senior from Louisville, Kentucky, Wheatley is on the student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) and has a 3.76 GPA in supply chain management. She has been on the Academic All-Big Ten Team three straight years.
"Ellie continues to work hard and excel in a difficult major while balancing a busy field hockey travel schedule," said Flynn. "Ellie has such a positive attitude and mindset which elevates those around her. She also is making a big impact in our community through her involvement in multiple outreaches through our Student-Athlete Development Program."
