Joiner and Ayrault Lift MSU Women Over Maryland, 74-69

The Spartans earn their first win against the Terps since 2019.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its first game at home over three weeks, the Michigan State women's basketball team used a dominating third quarter to stop Maryland, 74-69, at the Breslin Center on Tuesday evening.
The Spartans returned to the win column, improving to 12-3 this season and 2-2 in Big Ten play. Maryland falls to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in league contests. This is only the Spartans' third-ever win against the Terrapins, now standing 18-3. MSU's last win came in East Lansing on Jan. 17, 2019.
Michigan State had four players in double figures led by graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault, who earned her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate guard Moira Joiner also added 20 points with four assists and four rebounds. Joiner has reached double figures in scoring in all 15 games this season. Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann scored 12 points with a game-high seven assists, while sophomore guard Theryn Hallock added 14 points off the bench.
Maryland was led by 23 points from Shyanne Sellers, who was 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Maryland had the hot hand early on using a 6-0 run to take a 8-2 advantage. Joiner's first trey of the game put the Spartans back on top 11-10 with under four minutes left in the quarter. Michigan State's used a 9-0 run to take a 15-10 advantage before a pair of Bri McDaniel free throws. The Terps closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to lead after the first 10 minutes 17-15.
In the second quarter, both teams hit lengthy scoring droughts. Maryland went over five minutes without scoring and Michigan State went three. A Hagemann circus layup tied the score at 22-22 at the 3:42 mark. The Spartans 7-0 run was stopped by Sellers with under three minutes left in the half. The Terps re-gained momentum, scoring the final seven points to lead 29-22 at the break. At the break, Hagemann and Joiner led the Spartans with six points each. The 22 points was the least points scored in a half this season for MSU.
The Spartan offense came alive in the fourth period. MSU out-scored Maryland 24-14. The Spartans took as big a lead as seven points after a Joiner trey at the 2:30 mark. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter and MSU led heading into the fourth period, 74-69.
In a game with six lead changes and five ties, Michigan State did not relinquish its lead after re-taking it after an Ayrault triple to put the Spartans on top 54-51 with under seven minutes left in the game. The Terps got as close as two points, but MSU went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the fourth period to seal the win. Both Joiner and Ayrault showed why they are captains by combining for 20 of the Spartans' 28 fourth-quarter points.
Michigan State returns to the road to take on No. 17/16 Ohio State on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes
• Michigan State improved to 12-3 on the season, including 5-1 in the last six games.
• Tuesday was MSU's first home game in nearly a month as MSU was last at home on Dec. 17, after four road games in a row, and Tuesday's win over UMD was the Spartans' second-straight home win as part of improving to 7-1 at the Breslin Center this season ... additionally, Tuesday was MSU's first of four home games in a span of its next overall.
• The Spartans snapped a seven-game losing streak to Maryland in the all-time series, and MSU nabbed just its second-ever home win over Maryland at East Lansing as part of its third overall win ... Tuesday was MSU's first home win and first overall triumph over UMD since Jan. 17, 2019 when MSU won, 77-60 ... with Tuesday's 74-69 final score, the last two meetings have both been determined by five points after last year's 66-61 Maryland win on Feb. 18, 2023 in East Lansing ... overall, the last four match-ups have been decided by nine points or less.
• Tuesday's win was the first Victory for MSU this season when the Spartans were held under 80 points, as their only three losses of the season have been when being held under 80 ... MSU was contained to 69 points in its first loss of the season to Creighton (11/24), 74 in a loss to Nebraska (12/9) and 73 in the loss at Iowa last time out (1/2).
• With just 22 points in the first half, the Spartans scored their fewest first-half points for the second-straight game after the previous low was 37 from last outing, at Iowa (1/2).
• MSU's 52 second-half points were its sixth 50-point second-half outing, but most in a Big Ten game ... the Spartans' season-high for points in the second half was 56 at DePaul (11/30), while Tuesday's 52 points were its first 50-point second half in the last seven games, and the first time since 54 vs. Miami (Ohio) (12/3).
• Michigan State made seven 3-pointers Tuesday night as the Spartans earned their first win of the season when making less than eight treys, as all three losses on the season have come when MSU made seven or fewer from 3-point range ... the seven 3-pointers is tied for Michigan State's second-fewest of the season for the third time this season ... the Spartans were held to seven triples in their first loss of the season vs. Creighton (11/24), four in the only home loss of the season, vs. Nebraska (12/9), and seven in their last outing, at Iowa (1/2) ... MSU made four triples in the fourth quarter alone after just one in each of the previous three stanzas.
• The Spartans dished out 17 assists Tuesday night, as MSU is now 12-1 when distributing 15 or more helpers, with the lone loss coming with 16 assists vs. Nebraska (12/9).
• Despite playing with only eight players with a three-player bench, MSU had a 19-13 bench scoring advantage ... the Spartan bench has now out-scored its counterparts in 12 games, and Michigan State improved to 10-2 on the season when doing so.

• Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault registered her third double-double of the season and fifth of her career with a team-high tying 20 points and 10 rebounds, joining 25 points and 15 rebounds vs. James Madison (11/23) along with a 13 points and 10 rebounds outing vs. Central Michigan (12/17).
• Ayrault's 20 points was her third 20+ point outing of the season and third-highest behind her career-high 32 points vs. Coastal Carolina (12/21) and 25 vs. James Madison (11/23) ... Tuesday's 20 points was Ayrault's sixth-straight game in double-figures and the 12th double-digit scoring outing of the season.
• Ayrault's 10 rebounds were her third double-figure rebounding outing and tied for second-most of the season behind her career-high 15 vs. James Madison (11/23) and matching 10 boards vs. Central Michigan (12/17).
• Tuesday was the second-straight game and the fourth overall time this season that Ayrault has shared the team lead or led the Spartans in both scoring and rebounding ... it was Ayrault's eighth game leading or sharing the team-lead on the glass, and the Spartans are now 6-2 when she does so.
