EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State sixth-year graduate placekicker Jonathan Kim and freshman wide receiver Nick Marsh have earned weekly honors from the Big Ten for their performances in the 32-20 Homecoming win over Iowa last Saturday night in Spartan Stadium.
Kim earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week accolades after setting a school record with six made field goals, while Marsh was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
A native of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Kim connected on six of his seven field-goal attempts, including a season-long 55-yarder in the fourth quarter, which tied for the sixth longest in MSU history. He also was good from 42, 43, 36, 29 and 46 yards out.
Kim's six field goals passed the previous school record of five set by Paul Edinger (1998 vs. Northwestern and Ohio State) and John Langeloh (1988 vs. Wisconsin). It also tied a modern-day Big Ten record, matching Jake Moody of Michigan with six field goals vs. Indiana (11/17/18), and is tied for the most in a Big Ten game; E.C. Robertson of Purdue kicked seven field goals on Oct. 27, 1900, vs. Rose Poly. With 20 points overall against Iowa, including two PATs, Kim also set a top mark in modern-day Big Ten history by a kicker, bettering the 19 points by Moody in 2018 vs. Indiana.
Kim is 15-of-16 on field goals for the season to rank first in the Big Ten and tied for second in the FBS in made field goals.
Kim was also selected as one of the three Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week.
Marsh recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the season by tying his season high with eight catches for 113 yards. He also had eight receptions in his career-best 194-yard performance earlier this season in the win at Maryland, in which he was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Marsh is the first freshman in the Big Ten to win the award twice this season.
His last catch against Iowa went for 11 yards to the 1-yard line, setting up MSU's final touchdown of the game with 2:03 remaining to seal the victory over the Hawkeyes.
A native of Detroit, Marsh is the first Spartan true freshman to have two 100-yard receiving games in his first season. He leads the team with 433 receiving yards (72.2 ypg) and ranks second with 24 catches.
Michigan State (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 to face Michigan (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) in Ann Arbor at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
