Buffalo, NY. – No. 4 Michigan State completed the weekend sweep of Canisius on Saturday, earning a 4-1 victory at Lecom Harborcenter. The Spartans are now 5-1 on the year, and Canisius falls to 1-5.
After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for four goals in the middle frame. Tanner Kelly scored the first goal just 37 seconds into the period, and the Griffins broke through at 6:04 to tie the game at 1-1. The Spartans opened it up with goals from Joey Larson and Red Savage three minutes apart to make it a 3-1 contest, and a Isaac Howard goal in the third period gave the teams the final 4-1 score.
MSU once again pelted their hosts with shots over the course of the contest – a total of 97 shot attempts with 46 stops by goalie Petter Weckstrom Stumer, and 26 blocks by the Canisius defense. At the other end, Spartan goalie Luca Di Pasquo made 18 saves (11 in the final period) in his first start of the season.
Larson and Kelly each had a goal and an assist, with defenseman Maxim Štrbák picking up two assists in the game.
The Spartans amassed 48 penalty minutes, including two five-minute majors and 14 total minutes of penalty kill time. Di Pasquo and the MSU defense was up to the task, limiting Canisius to just six shots on net in those 14 minutes of man advantage. MSU finished 1-6 in the game on the power play, with Larson's goal coming on the man advantage and the Spartans twice scoring just seconds after the power play had expired.
The Spartans are idle next weekend and return to action at home on Nov. 8-9, hosting Ohio State.
First Period: The teams skated through a scoreless opening 20 minutes as they did the previous night, and the Spartans outshot their hosts 11-5. MSU killed off its first five-minute major
Second Period: The Spartans carried 30 seconds of power play time into the second period, and just after the penalty expired, found the first goal of the game. Matt Basgall sent the lead pass to Tiernan Shoudy, and he found Tanner Kelly for the senior's second goal of the weekend. The home team found the back of the net for the first time on the weekend at 6:04, when Dominic Payne held the puck and ripped a shot from the right circle through traffic to knot the game at 1-1. MSU immediately countered with a power play goal of its own with Larson ripping it from the left circle, and three minutes later after some nifty stickhandling off the top of the slot by Larson, his shot was tipped by Red Savage for a 3-1 MSU lead. The Spartans had a 26-10 lead in shots on goal through 40 minutes – and MSU had killed off two major penalties.
Third Period: MSU put a fourth on the board at 3:26. Isaac Howard carried the puck into the offensive zone and went to his left to Russell, and Russell dished it right back to Howard who went over the glove hand of goalie Petter Weckstrom Stumer. The visitors had 19 shots in the final period, with just four attempts going off target. As busy as the Canisius netminder was, Di Pasquo held up his end of the bargain in the Spartan end, stopping all 11 shots he faced.
