East Lansing, Mich.  - Michigan State field hockey completed its 2024 season on the road on Friday afternoon, falling in a 1-0 decision at Indiana.Â
Â
The Spartans (8-10, 1-6 B1G) played well defensively, holding off 13 total penalty corners and the Spartans came up with eight saves in the third quarter alone – five by keeper Lyra Gavino, a pair of defensive saves by Caro Shafer, and one defensive save by Ellie Rutherford. Gavino finished her afternoon with six saves total.Â
Â
The teams played through 45 minutes of scoreless action before the eventual game-winner came from Yip van Wonderen at 47:24. That gave the Spartans a little over 10 minutes to press for an equalizer, but despite outshooting their hosts 4-2 in the frame, the game-tying goal did not materialize.Â
Â
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie at the end of the first half, with Gavino making one save and Indiana (9-8) having a 4-2 edge in attempts and 2-0 advantage in penalty corners. The Hoosier offense found a different gear in the third quarter, where it outshot the Spartans 8-1 and had nine penalty corner attempts.Â
Â
The afternoon was the career finale for four Spartan seniors – Ellie Wheatley, Emma O'Neill, Ellie Rutherford, and Jillian Bonczewski. MSU finishes the season with double the wins it procured in 2023 (8) and owned a 3-4 record in overtime games.Â
