EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball once again flexed its defensive muscles, forcing 29 turnovers en route to a 95-49 win against Eastern Michigan on Monday night at the Breslin Center. Monday was also the Spartans annual Hoops for Troops to honor Veterans Day.
MSU has opened 3-0 for the second time in as many seasons under head coach Robyn Fralick. Michigan State also started 3-0 for the 10th-straight season since going 2-1 to open the 2014-15 season. Eastern Michigan falls to 0-3 this season. The was the first time that the teams met since 2019.
The Spartan's defense stymied the opposition for the third-consecutive game, as the Spartans have held their opponents under 50 points in all three games (42 by Oakland, 45 by Yale, 49 by Eastern Michigan).
Junior guard Theryn Hallock scored led the Spartans with 18 points in just over 18 minutes. She also added four assists and two steals. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault and freshman center Inés Sotelo both scored 13 points. The 13 points were the first double-digit scoring game for the freshman. Redshirt-freshman guard Kennedy Blair reached double figures for the third-straight game with 11 points. Graduate guard Jaddan Simmons made her first Spartan start, adding eight points six assists and four steals.
Eastern Michigan was led by a double-double from Sisi Eleko with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
After a pair of free throws by Simmons, the Spartans took their first double digit lead 18-8 with 5:09 remaining in the first period. Michigan State went on a 9-0 run to stretch the advantage to 27-10 with under two minutes remaining in the quarter. At the end if the first quarter, Hallock led all scorers with 14 points, as MSU led 29-14.
In the second quarter, the Eagles did not go away. Eastern Michigan cut it to a 15-point game after pair of Mackenzie Amalia free throws made it a 38-23 game. The Spartans made five of six baskets to open up a 46-25 advantage. Junior guard Emma Shumate's old fashioned three gave Michigan State the palindromic 52-25 lead. The Spartans scored 10 unanswered in 56 seconds leading to a EMU timeout at the 1:10 mark. MSU closed strong leading at the break, 58-25. The Spartan defense was tough forcing 25 first-half turnovers with 13 steals.
Michigan State was nipped by the turnover bug early in the third quarter with four over a 2:30 minute span. Despite the turnovers, the Spartans scored 11 of the first 14 points of the period. MSU maintained at least a 35 point advantage for all of the third quarter.Â
The Spartan freshmen took over in the fourth quarter. All 22 points scored in the final 10 minutes were by Michigan State newcomers, led by six from guard Juliann Woodard. Guard Sinai Douglas added four points, while Blair scored four of her 11 in the final stanza.
Michigan State conclude its four-game, season-opening homestand on Thursday, Nov. 14 Â against Eastern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m.

• Michigan State scored 95+ points for the third-straight game after 107 in last week's season-opener vs. Oakland on Nov. 5 and 100 points vs. Yale on Nov. 8 . . . it marks the first time since the 2017-18 season that MSU has scored 95+ points in its first three games when the Spartans matched this year's scoring with 100 points in the season-opener (100-58 vs. Robert Morris on 11/11/17), 95 in game two (95-63 vs. Oakland on 11/13/17) and 107 in game three (107-43 vs. Charleston).

• Michigan State also netted 30+ field goals for the third-straight game with a season-high 38 field goals Monday night . . . the Spartans also netted 50 percent or better in all three games, making 57.6 percent (38-of-66) Monday night after 52.4 percent (33-of-63) Friday vs. Yale and 50.0 percent (35-of-70) vs. Oakland.
• The Spartan defense also forced 29+ turnovers for the third game in a row, forcing 29 EMU turnovers Monday night, after 31 last time out vs. Yale and forcing Oakland into 33 miscues in the season-opener . . . MSU had a 40-9 points off turnovers advantage Monday night, as Michigan State committed 13 turnovers.
• Four or more Spartans posted double-digits for the third game in a row after six MSU players reached double-figures in game one and four scored 10+ points in game two, followed by four players Monday night, led by junior guard Theryn Hallock with 18 points Monday.
• Hallock registered her 21st career double-digit scoring outing in making a season-high eight field goals, just two shy of her career-best . . . Hallock has scored double-figures in her last four games played, along with in six of the last seven and 12 of her last 14 contests dating back to last season . . . the Spartan junior guard has scored 10 or more points in 20 of her last 28 contests since Nov. 30, 2023, her first double-figure outing last season after scoring in single-digits the first six games of the season, and only scoring in single-digits in back-to-back games once during that span.
• Ayrault's 13 points was her third double-digit scoring outing in as many games this season and her 41st career outing with 10+ points . . . she has scored in double-figures in 16-consecutive games and in 27 of her last 32 games played since the start of the 2023-24 season . . . with 13 points Monday, Ayrault now has netted 945 career points, leaving her just 55 away from becoming the 31st Spartan women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in her MSU career.
• Sotelo nearly doubled her Spartan scoring output with 13 points Monday after coming into game three of the season with eight points scored after two points in her MSU debut in the season-opener and six points last time out . . . the Spartan freshman was perfect on the night, making 5-of-5 field goals and 3-of-3 at the free throw line, adding three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
• Blair added double-figures for the third-straight game with 11 points Monday, after 12 points last time out and 10 points in the season-opener, which was her Green & White debut on Tuesday, after missing the entire 2023-24 season with an injury . . . Blair also pulled down seven rebounds, swiped three steals and dished out one assists, new top marks for rebounds and steals.
• Blair netted the first two 3-pointers of her Spartan career, going 2-of-3 from distance Monday night after just one previous attempt in the season-opener vs. Oakland, and the two treys tied for the team lead Monday.
• Graduate guard Jaddan Simmons pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, not only leading the Spartans on the glass for the first time this season, but snaring a season-high after just eight boards through the first two contests with four in each game.
• Simmons also dished out a team-best and game-high tying six assists, marking her second game this season with six helpers, also dishing out a half-dozen assists in the season-opener vs. Oakland, and four helpers last game vs. Yale . . . the Spartan guard also shared top honors on the team with four steals, a new career-high, topping her previous MSU top mark of three in game one vs. Oakland, and three vs. California (2/10/23) during her tenure at Arizona State.
