East Lansing, Mich. -- Trey Augustine was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 12, after an outstanding performance in a sweep of Ohio State last weekend.
Augustine stopped 51 of 54 shots and earned the 4-2 and 4-1 victories at Munn Arena. It is the second straight season that MSU has swept the Buckeyes in the Big Ten opener, and Augustine has won six of his seven games against OSU in his career.
The sophomore shares the Big Ten lead in games played (7), owns more victories than any other goalie in the league (6), and boasts a 1.57 GAA (third B1G/ 13th nationally) and .941 save percentage (fourth B1G/12th nationally). He is 3-1 against ranked teams among his six victories this season.
A year ago, Augustine was the youngest starting goaltender in Division I hockey - and looks like he may be again in 2024-25. Only two goalies younger than Augustine have played in games so far this season - Hampton Slukynsky split the team's six games at Western Michigan, and Nicholas Kempf has played three (of 10) at Notre Dame. Augustine has started seven of eight MSU games, and is a candidate to play a third consecutive World Junior Championship for Team USA in late December.
Augustine and the fourth-ranked Spartans host Notre Dame this weekend (7 pm Friday, 8 pm Saturday) to wrap a four-game homestand.
