WASHINGTON, D.C – Michigan State wrestling opened its season in the nation's capital on Saturday afternoon defeating American University by a final score of 20-12. MSU won five matches, including redshirt freshman Remy Cotton's 197-pound victory by tech fall.
"The guys showed some resilience and toughness today throughout the entire dual," said Michigan State head wrestling coach Roger Chandler. "I was very encouraged to see that they were able to stay tough throughout each match. We have a very youthful team, and they showed poise at critical moments which was positive. I give them a lot of credit for staying in the moment and focusing on themselves in each match."
Michigan State starts the dual season 1-0 for the seventh consecutive season and has now won 23 consecutive non-conference duals dating back to 2020.
Saturday's dual started at 125 pounds in a match full of fireworks. Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand trailed 15-7 heading into the third period where he scored an escape and three takedowns but fell via decision after riding time was factored in, 18-17. Weiand's comeback was all thanks to his effort late in the second period when Bainey looked to finish off a fall and Weiand fought off his back to keep the match alive.
Weiand caught Bainey napping and scored on a double leg near the edge of the mat with 1:03 to wrestle. With :44 seconds left Weiand tallied his second takedown of the period before quickly cutting his opponent. Down to 12 ticks left on the clock Weiand leapt over his opponent, scoring on a go-behind to tie the bout at 17-17 before the buzzer sounded.
Redshirt junior Andy Hampton got the Spartans on the scoreboard winning his bout at 133 pounds, 2-0. Hampton rode out the entire second period and scored on an escape with 1:28 to wrestle in the third period to lead 1-0.
American took back a lead following the 141-pound bout in which redshirt freshman Jaden Crumpler wrestled until the final whistle against former NCAA qualifier Jack Maida. Crumpler trailed 6-2 with short time before scoring a reversal at the buzzer to lose a 6-4 decision.
Redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III tied the dual at 6-6 with a 10-9 victory at 149 pounds. Jones scored early in the bout on a blast double, later winning a first period scramble to lead 6-1. Up 6-4, Jones picked his opponents ankle for a late second period takedown. Jones went ahead 10-5 after American elected to start the third period in neutral position.
Michigan State took its first lead of the dual following the 157-pound match in which redshirt sophomore Braden Stauffenberg earned a 3-1 decision victory. Stauffenberg quickly escaped to start the second period and picked up a stall point early in the third to lead 2-0. Riding time in favor of Stauffenberg pushed the final tally to 3-1.
Redshirt senior DJ Shannon was in on a few shots in the first period but headed to the second scoreless. Shannon's fast escape put him ahead 1-0 in the second, but his opponent scored on a late takedown. Shannon scored on a reversal late in the third but fell 7-3.
In another high-scoring bout, redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza won in his return to the lineup for MSU, 18-12. Garza trailed 4-3 early in the first before an escape and takedown put him ahead 7-4. A pair of escapes saw Garza lead by one mid-way through the second when he scored a takedown on a counter shot to lead 10-6. Garza quickly escaped and scored a takedown to start the third leading 14-7. A fast shot on a restart provided Garza with a 17-8 lead over his opponent heading into the final seconds of the third. American found a takedown late, but Garza had riding time to win 18-12.
Redshirt junior Luke Daly put on another Spartan tough ride to rack up two minutes of riding time in the second period of the 184-pound bout. An illegal move by American put Daly ahead 1-0 in the third before an escape increased his advantage to 2-0.
In the match of the afternoon, redshirt freshman Remy Cotton earned his first career dual victory via tech fall, 21-6. Cotton wasted no time getting to his offense, picking the ankle of his opponent and earning the takedown with 2:36 to wrestle in the first. A double-leg takedown put Cotton up 6-1 head to period two. Three Cotton takedowns put him ahead 15-5 going into the third. Two more third period takedowns ended the bout at the 6:07 mark.
"You saw what Remy Cotton can do today," said Chandler. "He stayed aggressive and was attacking the entire time. He has that mindset to keep attacking and because of that he was able to secure the team win for us today."
Also making his dual debut was redshirt freshman Max Vanadia at heavyweight. Vanadia held his own against a ranked opponent in No. 26 Will Jarrell. Jarrell led 4-0 mid-way through the second before Vanadia earned a reversal to cut the lead in half. Vanadia secured another reversal in the third after starting the period on bottom to trail by one, 5-4. An escape by Jarrell provided the final score of the bout, 6-4.
