Spartan Women's Basketball Opens Acrisure Classic Against Cal Tuesday

This is only the third meeting between the teams.
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Michigan State women's basketball will hit the road for the Thanksgiving break heading to Palm Springs, California for the Acrisure Classic Nov. 26-27. The Spartans open action against the Cal Bears on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. ET.
• The Spartans have started the season 6-0 for the first time under head coach Robyn Fralick, along with the second time in the last three years, as part of the third time in the last five seasons, joining the 2022-23 and 2020-21 seasons.
• Cal is off to a fast start with a 6-0 record this season. Last time out, the Bears defeated Auburn 63-59 on Nov. 22. The Spartans and the Bears have a limited history only playing twice. The series is tied 1-1 with MSU winning the last meeting in 1996.
• The Spartans have three players averaging in double figures led by junior forward Grace VanSlooten, who is averaging 16.6 ppg. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault is second in scoring with 13.6 ppg, while junior guard Theryn Hallock is third with 12.8 ppg.
• Michigan State is first in the nation in scoring margin through six games this season (+50.5). MSU also stands second in the nation and first in the Big Ten in assists per game, averaging 23.2 apg. On the defensive side of the ball, MSU is third in steaks per game, averaging 16.8 spg.
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA
California is off to a fast start with a 6-0 record. The Bears have a pair of road wins against San Jose State and Gonzaga. Last time out on Nov. 22, Cal edged out a 63-59 win over Auburn on Nov. 22.
The Bears have four players averaging in double figures, led by Lulu Twidale who is scoring 18.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Ioanna Krimili is second with 16.0 ppg. Kayla Williams and Marta Suarez are scoring 12.7 and 11.8 ppg, respectively. As a team, Cal is averaging 82.5 ppg, while allowing only 55.7 ppg.
Charmin Smith is in her sixth season at the helm of the Bears. She holds an overall career record of 62-80.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE BEARS
Michigan State and Cal have a very brief history with the series tied 1-1. In 1988 in Berkeley, Cal came out on top 64-54. In the only other meeting, Michigan State defeated Cal on the road, 93-62, in Berkeley.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following the game against the Bears, Michigan State will take on either Arizona or Vanderbilt. The Spartans don't have a very extensive history with either team. MSU is 1-1 against Arizona with the last meeting coming in 2004. Both team has won one neutral site meeting.
MSU holds a slight 2-1 advantage over Vanderbilt. The last meeting was in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 with the Spartans coming out out on top, 76-64.

The Acrisure Classic is a part of the Acrisure Series, the country's largest MTE series, (multiple team event) which will be held at the beautiful new 11,000-seat Acrisure Arena. The Acrisure Classic boasts some of the nation's strongest programs as Arizona, Vanderbilt and Michigan State all made the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
When graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault and junior forward Grace VanSlooten both recorded double-doubles against Western Michigan on Nov. 17, it was the first time since Dec. 17, 2023 against CMU. In that game, Ayrault had 13 points and 10 assists, while Theryn Hallock had 17 points and 12 assists. The last time that two Spartans reached double figures in rebounds was on Jan. 23, 2022, when Tamara Farquhar had 11 and Alisia Smith added 10 against Minnesota.
GOING BACK TO CALI
This is the first time that the Spartans have played in the state of California since the 2016-17 season when MSU played in the Radisson Thanksgiving Classic in Northridge, California. In that tournament, the Spartans defeated Delaware, 88-55, before edging host CSUN, 63-59. In the 2009, NCAA Regional Semifinals, MSU fell to Iowa State in Berkeley.
LOCKED IN DEFENSE
Graduate guard Nyla Hampton and senior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate are tied for sixth in the Big Ten in steals with 3.8 steals per game. The MSU defense has been tough all season. Twice this year the Spartans have tallied 22 steals in a game: against Detroit Mercy on Nov. 20 and against Oakland on Nov. 5. The only team in the Big Ten with more steals in a game is USC with 28 against CSUN on Nov. 12. The Spartans are first in the B1G in steals, averaging 16.8 spg.

• All 20 points scored by Michigan State in the fourth quarter was scored by freshmen off the bench, including forward Helen Holley netting her first career points with a lay-up. Guard Kennedy Blair added seven points, while forward Juliann Woodard scored 10. MSU's bench out-scored its counterparts from Detroit Mercy, 42-27.
• The Spartan defense held Detroit Mercy to 44 points, tying for the second-fewest points allowed behind 42 points done twice, most recently last time out vs. Western Michigan (11/17/24) and matching holding Oakland to 42 points in the season-opener on Nov. 5. Michigan State's defense has limited the opposition under 50 points for the fifth game through six contests this season.
CLOSING IN ON 1,000
Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault netted 15 points on Nov. 17 at Western Michigan, as she has recorded double-figures in all five contests this season and in 18-straight games and 29 of her last 34 ballgames played since the start of the 2023-24 season. Ayrault's 15 points gives her 979 career points, only 21 points away from becoming the 31st Spartan women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in her MSU career.
Junior forward Grace VanSlooten is also approaching the 1,000-point mark in just three seasons. She has 970 career points between her two years at Oregon and her time at Michigan State.
BRINGING THE BOOM
For the 2024-25 season, Michigan State women's introduced its new student section - the Breslin Boom. First introduced by Coach Fralick at Michigan State Madness, Spartan students will be encouraged to yell "BOOM" on any big MSU plays.
STINGY DEFENSE
MSU held Detroit Mercy to eight points in the first quarter and eight points the fourth frame on Nov. 20, as the Spartans have now stymied the opposition to single-digits in at least one quarter of all six games, as part of in 10 quarters out of the 24 total quarters played. MSU has posted multiple quarters with single-figure scoring in four of the six games this season.
WOODARD WOWS AGAIN
Freshman forward Juliann Woodard came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points on Nov. 20, topping her season-high for the second-straight home game after netting 16 points in just 6:31 of playing time against Eastern Kentucky (11/14/24). Woodard posted her 17 points in 13:52 of playing time Wednesday night, an average of 1.2 points per minute. She has 33 points in 20:23 of playing time in the last two home games, an average of 1.6 points per minute.
Through the first six games of the season, Woodard now has scored 58 points in just over 46 minutes played, an average of 1.3 points per minute play.
PUTTING UP THE POINTS
Against Detroit Mercy on Nov. 20, MSU hung 95+ points on the scoreboard for the fifth-straight home game as part of the fifth time out of the six total games so far this season. The five times scoring 95 points or more in six games is the most in program history. Wednesday night's 101 points marked Michigan State's third 100-point scoring outing of the season through the first six games.
NUMBERS DON'T LIE
When Julia Ayrault and Jocelyn Tate reach double figures, the numbers don't lie. This season, MSU is 5-0 when Ayrault reaches double figures in scoring. She has reached double figures 45 times for her career and the Spartans are 34-11 in those games. Michigan State is 2-0 this year when Tate reaches double figures. For her MSU career, the Spartans are 7-1 in the eight games she has reached double digits in scoring.

Michigan State is first in the Big Ten in scoring offense, averaging 96.3 points per game, just ahead of Ohio State's 92.8 ppg. The Spartans are also tied for first in the league in scoring defense, allowing only 45.8 ppg. MSU is also tied for second in the league in assists with 23.4 apg and are first in steals with 16.8. The Spartans are first in turnover margin, forcing +14.5 per game.

Four Michigan State women's basketball players reached double figures, as the Spartans cruised to a 101-44 victory of Detroit Mercy Wednesday night at the Breslin Center.
Despite playing just 14 minutes, freshman forward Juliann Woodard led the Spartans in scoring with 17 points off the bench. She went 7-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Junior forward Grace VanSlooten scored 16 points, adding seven boards and five assists. Graduate guard Jaddan Simmons, who earned her second start of the season, had a MSU career-high with 15 points and three steals. Junior guard Theryn Hallock added 11 points and tied a career high with four steals, while redshirt-freshman Kennedy Blair added 10 points.
INCREDIBLE INES
All six of the Spartan freshmen have seen action in all six games, but rookie Inés Sotelo had a standout performance against Eastern Michigan on Nov. 11. Sotelo reached double figures for the first time in her MSU career with 13 points against the Eagles, going 5-for-8 from the field. For the season, she is averaging 6.2 points with five steals.

Michigan State head coach Robyn Fralick has announced guard/forward Julia Ayrault and guard Nyla Hampton as team captains, as voted on by the players on the 2024-25 women's basketball team.
This is Ayrault's second season as a captain for the Spartans. She is the first Spartan to be a captain in back-to-back seasons since Jenna Allen during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
Hampton is in her first season with the Spartans, but is familiar with head coach Robyn Fralick. She played three seasons with Bowling Green before transferring to Ball State last season.
VANSLOOTEN NAMED TO WATCH LIST
Michigan State Women's Basketball junior forward Grace VanSlooten was named to the Cheryl Miller Award preseason watch list, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
She is one of five Big Ten players on the list along with Indiana's Yarden Garzon, Maryland's Saylor Poffenbarger, Ohio State's Cotie McMahon and UCLA's Angela Dugalić. The award honors the nation's top small forwards.

Michigan State women's basketball head coach Robyn Fralick announced the signing of three signees on Wednesday, including Jordan Ode (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove High School), Anna Terrian (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee High School) and Amy Terrian (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee High School).
Ode is a 6-0 guard, who is a native of Maple Grove, Minn. She attends Maple Grove High School and is coached by Mark Cook. Ode is currently ranked No. 33 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings. Ode is a three-time all-conference honoree, as well as capturing all-state honors twice. During her junior season, she broke the Maple Grove single-season and all-time scoring records. As a junior, she averaged 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Anna Terrian is a 5-8 guard, who is a native of Pewaukee, Wis., and plays for head coach Jim Reuter at Pewaukee High School. As a junior, she averaged 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. In 2023 and 2024, she earned WBCA D2 honorable mention. She also plays tennis for Pewaukee High School, where she was first-team all-conference. She played AAU for the Wisconsin Lakers.
Amy Terrian is a 5-8 guard, who is a native of Pewaukee, Wis., plays for head coach Jim Reuter at Pewaukee High School. Terrian is currently ranked No. 89 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings. As a junior, she averaged 18.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. She became the first Pewaukee player to earn AP first-team all-state honors in 2024. She has earned all-state honors three-straight years.
COASTAL ADVENTURES
The Spartans will play in two tournaments this season. Over Thanksgiving, Michigan State will head to Palm Springs, California for the Acrisure Classic. The Spartans will take on California in their first game on Nov. 26 before facing either Arizona or Vanderbilt in their second game on Nov. 27. Amy Terrian is a 5-8 guard, who is a native of Pewaukee, Wis., plays for head coach Jim Reuter at Pewaukee High School. Terrian is currently ranked No. 89 in the ESPNW HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings. As a junior, she averaged 18.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. She became the first Pewaukee player to earn AP first-team all-state honors in 2024. She has earned all-state honors three-straight years.
COASTAL ADVENTURES
The Spartans will play in two tournaments this season. Over Thanksgiving, Michigan State will head to Palm Springs, California for the Acrisure Classic. The Spartans will take on California in their first game on Nov. 26 before facing either Arizona or Vanderbilt in their second game on Nov. 27. Before the Holiday break, MSU will play West Palm Beach Classic. MSU will take on Montana on Dec. 19 and Alabama on Dec. 20.
