Brandon Munson named to the All-Freshman team.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Redshirt-junior Zac Kelly was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, as the All-Big Ten awards were announced Friday by the conference.
Kelly, a native of Holt, Michigan, is the first Spartan to earn B1G Goalkeeper of the Year since Jimmy Hague in 2017. He is the sixth Spartan player to earn Player of the Year Honors with the last being Giuseppe Barone, who won Midfielder of the Year accolades in 2018. Former Spartan netminder and current assistant coach Reid Friedrichs did earn Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 1996.
The Spartan goalkeeper also captured first-team All-Big Ten honors for the first time in his career. Kelly started all 17 games this season allowing only 18 goals for a 1.06 GAA. He ended the season with seven shutouts, which is tied for first in the Big Ten with Washington's Jadon Bowton. The seven shutouts were the most by a Spartan since Hague had nine in 2018.
Defender Brandon Munson was also named to the All-Freshman Team. He follows in the footsteps of defender Will Eby, who was named to the team in 2023. Midfielder Jonathan Stout and forward Jake Spadafora were named to the squad in 2022. Munson, a native of Spring Hill, Florida, had a solid season before injury cut his season short. He played in 14 games, starting 13, before getting hurt against Michigan on Oct. 22.
Indiana's Tommy Mihalic was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Ohio State's Michael Adedokun earned Midfielder of the Year honors. Maryland's William Kulvik was the Defender of the Year, while Wisconsin's Dean Boldz was Freshman of the Year. Ohio State's Brian Maisonneuve captured Coach of the Year accolades.
The Big Ten also recognized nine Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Junior midfielder Jonathan Stout earned the Sportsmanship Award for the Spartans.
