East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State sophomores Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) and Maxim Štrbák (Košice, Slovakia) will represent their home nations for the upcoming 2025 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships, officially named to the rosters late this week.
The 2025 tournament will be held in Ottawa, Ontario. The US and Slovakia face off today (Saturday, Dec. 21) in a pre-tournament exhibition game at 7 pm. Team USA officially begins play on Dec. 26 with a game against Germany at 2:30 pm ET, while Slovakia begins pool play the next day at 1 pm ET against Switzerland. Both players are repeat selections for their home nations. Štrbák will play in his fourth World Juniors this winter, which is an IIHF record – only 11 other individuals have previously participated in four WJC in their careers. The defenseman has actually been selected for five national team squads for this tournament, but one tournament was canceled due to Covid. He has appeared in 14 all-time WJC games with a goal and nine assists to his credit.
Augustine has been on two previous WJC squads with Team USA, capturing bronze in 2023 and a gold medal last January in Sweden. Along with fellow Americans Jack Campbell (2010-12) and Alan Perry (1984-86), he is one of a 19 of goaltenders all-time to make three WJC squads in their career, also an IIHF record for goaltenders. In his gold medal performance a year ago, he boasted a 1.75 GAA and .936 save percentage and played both the semifinal and the gold-medal game. He owns an 8-1-0 record, 2.20 GAA, and .911 save percentage in 10 all-time tournament games.
Their contributions to the Spartans will be missed in the interim. The Spartans, who entered the break as the No. 1 team in the country, own a 13-2-1 overall record and are 6-1-1 in the Big Ten. As a sophomore, Augustine – a second-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings - is still the youngest starting goaltender in Division I college hockey and boasts a 1.98 GAA and .930 save percentage, both which rank among the best in the Big Ten and in the top 15 nationally. Štrbák, drafted by the Buffalo Sabres, owns a 1-8-9 scoring line in 16 games on the defense's top pair. He is tied for fourth on the team in assists, is a +4, and is third on the team with 17 blocked shots (and tied for second in points among defensemen on the squad).
Michigan State returns to play on Dec. 29-30 at the Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids.
