Opening statement...
Great team win tonight. I thought we had a great environment, a great crowd, and great energy in the Breslin. I was informed after the game that it was the best start in school history, so that was something we talked about in the locker room after. That was a great start, obviously we have more work to do. It was a really good team win. DePaul was obviously really focused on taking away the paint, and I thought our guards did a great job of taking advantage of that.
On the significance of having the best start in program history and the grit that this group has shown...Â
I think as a coach of you looked at your schedule and said where you wanted to be after nine games it would be 9-0. I think it is just a small part of the story, but it is where we want to be knowing there's a lot more challenges that continue to be ahead. To be good you have to be good on all kinds of different nights. Good shooting nights, bad shooting nights, different personnel, different matchups. You have to be multi-dimensional, and I think we have ways to do that so far. I think of the tournament two just came back from. We had to do that, and this is something we have to be able to continue to do during Big Ten matchups.
Â
On Jaddan Simmons' performance tonight...Â
She was great on both sides of the ball. Defensively, she is accountable, and offensively, as I shared, they were packing the paint, and she did a great job picking her spots. When to attack, when to finish, when to shoot. It was really, really efficient.
On having 14 Blocks. Was that all effort or are you doing something defensively...Â
I was teasing them in the locker room because they were excited about that. I said I thought half of them was when we were late to help. But I think it's a combination. I think we have some good length, and we have some good athleticism at the rim. We were also pressing, so some of that is in rotation, so you're sprinting over and have to make a play. I think we did a good job making plays when we were extended in our full court press.
On your second season at MSU and how it's been transferring from Bowling Green to MSU...
It's pretty cool with my coaching experience because I was a Division IIÂ coach for 10 years, I was a Mid-Major coach for five years, and then obviously this is my second year at Michigan State. What I've learned is that the things that really matter, connection with the kids, having good relationships, having clear teachings and clear expectations. That's what's cool about it. I think as you move up levels, there's higher level basketball and more spotlight and a lot of things that go with that. But when you're working with kids, the things that have mattered, have mattered everywhere I've been. We have found that our staff, most of us have been together for a while, have found that to be true here too.
