Detroit, Mich.. – No. 9 Michigan State defeated No. 11 Michigan, 3-2, in front of a Duel in the D record crowd of 18.410 at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday night. The win sent MSU's record to 20-7-3 overall and 14-4-2 in Big Ten play, securing the Spartans home ice in the Big Ten Tournament and maintaining its spot atop the Big Ten standings as the Spartans remain in the hunt to capture their first title since the start of the conference for the start of the 2013-14 campaign.
MSU also won its third straight game against Michigan and recorded its program-best fifth sweep of a Big Ten opponent this season. Two sweeps have come at home (Notre Dame and Wisconsin), two on the road (at Ohio State and Penn State) and added this weekend at Michigan and in Detroit at Little Caesar's Arena. In fact, since the holiday break, MSU has gone 8-3-1 overall, with seven of the eight wins (and the tie) coming away from its friendly confines at Munn Ice Arena. .
Michigan State's fourth line – freshman Tommi Männistö and junior Tanner Kelly centered by sophomore Tiernan Shoudy – terrorized the Wolverines all weekend and accounted for six points in Saturday night's game. Combined with stout goaltending from freshman Trey Augustine (37 saves), MSU kept Michigan's high-octane offense at bay not only on Saturday, but throughout the weekend.
Kelly opened the scoring against Michigan for the second straight game, executing a nifty spin-o-rama move at the hashmarks to send the Spartans into the locker room with the lead at the first intermission. MSU outscored the Wolverines 2-1 in the second period, getting goals from Shoudy and Karsen Dorwart to answer for a Michigan power play goal from Dylan Duke early in the frame.
MSU was buzzing well into the third period, with an aggressive forecheck and lots of action in its own offensive zone. The Wolverines were able to pull closer on a Gavin Brindley goal nearly 11 minutes into the game, which brought it to a 3-2 contest. MSU was sound defensively and continued to generate offensive chances, outshooting Michigan 12-8. Augustine was particularly impressive down the stretch, maintaining his calm demeanor and turning away the remainder of the shots he faced to secure the Spartan sweep. In addition to Augustine's 36 saves, MSU blocked 16 shots – including seven by junior David Gucciardi.
Jake Barczewski also made 36 saves for the Wolverines, who fell to 14-11-3 and 7-9-2 in Big Ten play.
MSU is idle next weekend, returning home Feb. 23-24 for a series against Ohio State.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
First Period: Tanner Kelly scored in his second straight game, putting MSU on the board first with a goal at 12:55. Tiernan Shoudy threw the puck netward from the left wall, and it tipped off the stick of Tommi Männistö and onto the blade of Kelly, who was at the bottom of the hash marks. He made a nifty spin move and threw the puck right at Barczewski and beat him blocker-side.
Second Period: The Spartans took a penalty early in the second to activate the dangerous Michigan power play. A minute into the man advantage, a heavily marked Gavin Brindley carried the puck up the left side and below the goal line, and he passed it out to Dylan Duke in the left circle. MSU regained the lead less than four minutes later, as Männistö fed Nienhuis in the high slot for a good open look. Barczewski made the save, but the rebound came out to his right – Tiernan Shoudy jumped on it to score his third of the season. MSU went up 3-1 after an impressive piece of work out of Kelly – after he took a pass from Isaac Howard, Kelly completely drew Barczewski out of position and dropped a backhand pass to Dorwart below the left hash, and he had all sorts of space for his 12th goal of the season.
Third Period: MSU's puck pressure was still a major factor as the teams navigated the third period, limiting the Wolverines to just eight shots on net as they tried to climb back into the game. Gavin Brinley gave his team some hope with a goal at 10:51, tapping home a loose puck for his 17th goal of the season. Michigan kept trying to gain an equalizer, but ran up against Augustine if they were able to get pucks through the MSU defense which frustrated it all weekend. While Michigan had a few good looks – particularly in the final minute of play – nothing would get by the freshman from MSU as the Spartans secured their third straight victory over their archrival.
