Big Ten Names Augustine Second Star of the Week

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State freshman goalie Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich) has been named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week. This is his third Star honor this season, and the ninth time a Spartan has been honored by the league office.

Augustine backstopped the Spartans (20-7-3, 14-4-2) to a sweep of 11^th-ranked Michigan, holding the Wolverine offense (which ranked second nationally entering the series) to three goals. The freshman earned his second win in as many tries at Yost Ice Arena on Friday with a 5-1 win behind a 29-save performance, and then stood strong in a 3-2 victory on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena, making 37 saves.

The freshman – the youngest goaltender in college hockey – has been a huge piece of the Spartan success this season, as MSU has won 20 games for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Spartans have won more games in the Big Ten conference (14) than any time in the conference's decade-long history, and currently sit atop the B1G standings with 46 points, five ahead of second-place Wisconsin.

As he has helped spur team success, he has also established himself as one of the top netminders not only in the conference, but also across the country. His .917 save percentage is 13^th nationally, he ranks in a tie for fourth in shutouts (3) and is sixth in winning percentage (.731).

The Spartans are idle this weekend, and return home for their final regular-season home series against Ohio State on Feb. 23-24.
