"We had a fantastic first day that really demonstrates our process of building," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "Everyone here is a part of the success of everyone else, so the accomplishments that we had today, everyone had a hand in."
While day one consisted of mostly preliminaries, the Michigan State men occupy 7th in the team standings with 11 points while the women are 6th of 13 with 20 points ahead of the conference finals Saturday.
Graduate student and likely NCAA Championships heptathlete Heath Baldwin set his fourth MSU school record, his 7.86 second 60 meter hurdles time breaking the previous record last set by Will Agodu in 2018. The 2023 George Alderton Male Athlete of the Year also holds the MSU Heptathlon, Decathlon and Javelin records.
To cap off the afternoon, the women's distance medley relay team avenged their second-place finish at last season's championships with the team's first championship of the weekend. Junior Kate Stewart-Barnett, senior Shae Harbaugh, senior Abbey Carvey and graduate student Lauren Freeland outpaced the conference competition with a time of 11:12.91.
