Michigan State Sends Seniors Out in Style with Win over Illinois, 87-70

EAST LANSING, Mich. - With five players in double figures, Michigan State women's basketball sent seniors Moira Joiner and Tory Ozment out in style with a wire-to-wire win against Illinois, 87-70, Thursday night at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans improve to 21-7 overall and 11-6 in Big Ten games, winning four straight. This is the first time since the 2015-16 season that MSU has exceeded the 10-win mark in league play, finishing 13-5 that season.
Joiner and sophomore guard Theryn Hallock led the Spartans with 16 points each, part of five players in double figures. Ozment also had a strong Senior Day with 15 points, while junior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate added 11 points and two steals. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault had her fourth double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Michigan State defense was tough throughout the game, forcing 18 turnovers. Hallock tied her career high with four steals.
Illinois was led by 21 points and 10 boards from former Spartan Kendall Bostic.
After a steal and a fast-break bucket by Hallock, the Spartans jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Spartans used a 8-0 run to pull ahead 17-5 at the midway mark of the period. Behind 10 points from Joiner, MSU lead at the end of the first period, 25-13. Joiner went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond that arc in the first 10 minutes. The Spartans were also solid defensively, forcing seven turnovers.
Michigan State scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to take its first 20-point lead 35-13, leading to an Illinois timeout. Later in the period, MSU used another 10-0 run to extend its lead to 45-20. MSU shot a season-high 70.6 percent in the first half. With Ayrault and Joiner both in double figures, the Spartans led 56-26 at half time.
Illinois scored the first six points of the third quarter, as MSU called an early timeout, leading 56-32. After a slow start to the period, the Spartan offense began to pick up. Hallock scored the final seven points of the period, heading into the fourth quarter with a 74-42 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, the Illini used a 9-0 try to tighten the score to 75-51 with under seven minutes left in the game. Despite Illinois, out-scoring the Spartans 28-13 in the fourth quarter, MSU prevailed 28-13. In the second half, Hallock led the way with seven points, while Tate and junior guard DeeDee Hagemann both scored five.
Following the game MSU, celebrated Joiner for her five seasons at MSU and Ozment for her six.
Michigan State will hit the road for its regular-season finale, traveling to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers on Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

• Michigan State's starting five for Thursday's game made up of junior guard DeeDee Hagemann, sophomore guard Abbey Kimball junior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate, graduate guard Moira Joiner and graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault was MSU's 19th-consecutive game with those five Spartans on the court for tip-off. Michigan State has started a total of 25 games this season with that starting five, improving to 18-7 on the season. The only other two Spartans to start this season are sophomore guard Theryn Hallock and junior forward Isaline Alexander.
