COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Michigan State wrestling finished day one of the B1G Championships with 10 total victories that featured two wrestlers, senior 157-pounder Chase Saldate and 184-pound graduate Layne Malczewski punching their tickets to the NCAA Championships.
Action kicked off with redshirt senior Jordan Hamdan, who entered the tournament as the No. 8 seeded 141-pounder, where he picked up MSU's first victory of the day with a 4-2 victory over Indiana's Danny Fongaro. It was a revenge win for Hamdan as he lost to Fongaro, 6-4, in their head-to-head bout at Indiana.
No. 4 seed Caleb Fish had the only pin of the day for Michigan State, as he opened his tournament with a fall over Rutgers' No. 13-seeded Anthony White at the 4:32 mark in the second period to advance his way into the quarterfinals at 165 pounds.
Saldate would snag a pair of wins on day one as he rolled to a major decision victory over Rutgers' Al Desantis, 9-1. The Gilroy, California, native utilized a 2-0 edge in takedowns. After dropping a close 6-5 bout to Indiana's Brayton Lee, Saldate responded with a dominant 10-2 victory over Maryland's' Michael North where he controlled the whole match with an impressive 5:29 of riding time.
At 184 pounds, the No. 6-seeded Malczewski was the fourth Spartan to punch his ticket into the quarterfinals. A key first period takedown from Malczewski was the difference maker as it was the lone takedown of the match. Malczewski would walk out with a 4-0 victory to open his fifth Big Ten Championship appearance.
Redshirt senior and No. 13 seed DJ Shannon kept his NCAA hopes alive over in the ninth-place bracket, as he tallied the Spartans lone tech fall of the day. The Madison, Illinois, native steamed his way through Northwestern's' No. 14 seed David Ferrante, 18-2. Shannon exploded out the gates with two takedowns and two, four-point near falls in the opening period.
Andy Hampton (133), Braden Stauffenberg (149) and Kael Wisler (197) each picked up their first career B1G Championships victories.
The tournament continues Sunday with sessions three and four (finals and placing bouts) at 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Three Michigan State wrestlers still control their destiny to Kansas City, 125-pounder Tristan Lujan and Shannon are in the ninth place bracket and Fish in the second round of the ninth place matches.
