Spartans Split Saturday Action At First Pitch Invite In Greenville
3/2/2024 8:35:00 PM | Baseball
MSU wallops WMU, 13-3, in 8 innings in opener, defeated by Florida State, 11-2 in second game.
MSU rapped out 18 hits in the opener, while limiting WMU to just seven hits and three runs.Â
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy in game one, and we played Spartan baseball. We took extra bases, we were aggressive, and we did a nice job offensively, defensively, and base-running, all of it," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought our guys really did a nice job at the plate against a good arm, and I thought we played clean."
In game two, the Spartans knocked 10 hits, while FSU scored 11 runs on 13 hits, and MSU committed an uncharacteristic five errors.
"In the second game, it was kind of the opposite," Boss said. "I think they dictated the pace of play a little bit more in game two, and we didn't have a chance to really get our running game going a whole lot. We had a couple opportunities with some traffic on the bases, and hit some balls hard, but it was right at some guys, and that's the way the game goes sometimes. Florida State is a really good team. Their starter, Arnold, is as good of an arm as we're going to see all year. We didn't play very clean, with five errors and you can't do that against good ballclubs because they're going to capitalize on it."
After Friday's action at Flour Field was rained out, all three teams played two games apiece on Saturday. MSU and WMU opened the quadruple-header with first pitch at 9 a.m., while the Spartans and Seminoles squaring off at 12:30 p.m.Â
