What you need to know about Spartan Hockey

• No. 5/5 Michigan State hosts its first-ever Big Ten Tournament championship game at Munn Ice Arena - the opponent: archrival No. 10/10 Michigan.  This is the most-played (and perhaps most passionate) rivalry in college hockey - the teams will play game no. 347 with a championship on the line on Saturday night.  The Wolverines own a 180-142-24 edge in the series all-time, but the Spartans have earned three victories in a row - two at Yost and one at Little Caesar's Arena.  The Spartans are 70-56-12 in home games against their archrival.  This is the first time these rivals will meet in a Big Ten Tournament final, but faced off in CCHA Tournament title games three times - in 1997 and 2002 the Wolverines claimed the title, and MSU won it in 2001.  In postseason CCHA games, MSU owned a slim 7-6 lead over its archrival.Â
•  MSU had finalists in each of the five major Big Ten postseason awards, headlined by freshman Artyom Levshunov who captured both the Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards (and was a finalist for Player of the Year).  Levshunov also earned First Team All-Big Ten honors as well as a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team with classmate Trey Augustine.  Augustine is a Second Team All-Big Ten pick and was  a finalist for Goaltender of the Year.  Adam Nightingale earned Coach of the Year honors after being a finalist in 2022-23.  Karsen Dorwart, Isaac Howard, and Joey Larson all earned Honorable Mention kudos, and Nicolas Müller was the Sportsmanship Award honoree. Â
•  In the two regular-season series against Michigan, two different lines were the catalysts to MSU's success.  In the January matchups, Nicolas Müller had a five-point weekend against the Wolverines as the only Spartan with multiple goals (3-2-5).  Jeremy Davidson had a goal and three assists as MSU's all-veteran line (including Reed Lebster) accounted for 10 points. In the second series, it was MSU's fourth line providing the spark, combining for nine points (3-6-9).  Tanner Kelly had two goals (one in each game) and an assist, (+4).  Tiernan Shoudy added a goal and two assists, which included a goal and an assist in the game at LCA.  Freshman Tommi Männistö produced his highest weekend point total of the season with a three-assist effort in the two games against the Wolverines.  He had assists on each of his linemates' goals at LCA for his second career multiple-point game.
• Levshunov averages just below a point per game (9-23-32, 35 GP), and is tied for 12th in the country and atop the B1G with a +25. He ranks ninth among defensemen nationally in points, sixth in defenseman goals, and second among first-year rearguards behind Denver's Zeev Buium (9-35-44).  As MSU's top freshman point producer, Levshunov needs seven points to join the all-time freshmen scorers list, which would tie Mike York's 39 points in 1995-96.
Â
•  Augustine made 37 saves in the Big Ten semifinals against Ohio State, allowing just one goal.  He has made 30 saves or more in 17 of 25 games against Big Ten opponents, including averaging 39 saves per game over his last three contests against Wisconsin (twice) and Ohio State.   Augustine has started 32 games this season, with a .919 save percentage, 2.86 GAA, and 21-8-2 record.  He is first in the B1G in saves per game (31.75) and second in total saves (1016, third nationally), and wins (21, fifth nationlly).
