
Spartans Conclude 2024 Season at NCAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Michigan State had a pair of wrestlers compete on the second day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, but the Spartans ultimately concluded their 2023-24 season on Friday, March 22 inside the T-Mobile Center.
Senior 165-pounder Caleb Fish led the Green and White on the second day of the tournament, reaching the consolation round of three in his respective weight class and boasted a 2-2 overall record. Fish began his day putting on an impressive performance defeating No. 22-seed Noah Mulvaney from Air Force with a major decision victory, 16-5. The Eaton Rapids, Michigan, native opened the match with a takedown in under thirty seconds to go into the middle stanza with a 3-1 advantage. Fish would elect bottom after Mulvaney differed the coin toss, Fish would make him pay as he reversed the position while tacking on four near fall points. Fish would execute two more takedowns in the final period to stamp an explanation point on the match and advance to the consolation round three. It was the fourth match this season for Fish where he scored more than 15 points in a match.
In the consolation round three bout, Fish went head-to-head against Air Force's Giano Petrucelli. It was a low scoring bout with no takedowns, Petrucelli led 1-0 going into the final period. From there he would rack up riding time and secured two back points en route to a 4-0 victory.
Fish finished his 2023-24 campaign with a 27-11 overall record and had a team high seven major decision victories.
Graduate 184-pounder Layne Malczewski capped off his collegiate career on Friday afternoon. In the consolation round two match against No. 9-seed Bennett Berge from South Dakota State. Malczewski would go into the final minute of the third period with a 6-3 lead and riding time advantage, a Berge escape and a takedown in the final 45 seconds would take away Malczewski's riding advantage and escape with a 7-6 victory.
Malczewski ended his Spartan career with 104 career wins, which is tied for 19th in program history. His 29 career falls ranks eighth in program history and would have a lasting impact on the program leaving it in better standings than when he came in.
