Seymour belts second home run in as many meetings with Western Michigan
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Michigan State baseball's Randy Seymour bashed his second home run in as many meetings with Western Michigan to boost the Spartans to a 5-3 Victory for MSU over the Broncos Friday afternoon in First Pitch Invitational II action at Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive.
The Broncos scored two runs in their first at bat, only to have the Spartans rally with twice that amount of runs with a four-spot in the opening frame. MSU's pitching, behind sophomore starting pitcher Joseph Dzierwa, and solid defense supported the offense for a Spartan triumph. Michigan State beat Western Michigan for the second time in a week, after last Saturday's 13-3, 8-inning run-rule walloping of WMU in last weekend's First Pitch Invite I, also at Fluor Field in Greenville. With the win, the Spartans moved to 5-7 on the young season, while the Broncos leveled their ledger at 7-7.
"I'm very proud of our guys. It was not the greatest start that we wanted, when you hit a guy and walk a guy, and both of them scored, and Western Michigan does a nice job of making you really work," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought Joseph settled into the game really well after that, and didn't allow anyone past first base until the sixth. I'm really proud of how we responded in the first inning. I thought Jack Frank's leadoff bunt was a huge play to start to get some momentum back for us, and we do pretty good when we get the other team uncomfortable, and I thought Jack did that in the first inning and we were able to put up a big number."
WMU plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, only to have the Spartan counter with a four-run home half of the frame, bolstered by junior designated hitter Christian Williams' bases-loaded two-run double down the left field line for a 4-2 advantage.
Sophomore starting southpaw Joseph Dzierwa settled in an kept the Broncos in check from there, finishing with six strikeouts in 6.0 IP, scattering five hits and walking to, earning his first win of the season.
Seymour's home run came in the bottom of the sixth stanza to regain a two-run advantage for the Spartans after WMU had cut the gap to 4-3 with a run in the top of the sixth. The sophomore shortstop smacked the first round-tripper of his career in last Friday's walloping of WMU, over the Green Monster at Fluor Field, as the Drive are the High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox and Fluor Field has the same dimensions as Fenway Park.
The 5-3 advantage was secured the rest of the game by the Spartan bullpen, as sophomore Nolan Higgins came on in the seventh and got out of a bases-loaded jam with a big strikeout to thwart the threat by the Broncos. Freshman Logan Pikur fired a 1-2-3 eighth inning, getting assistance from the infield with a nifty 4-6-3 double play. Sophomore Tommy Szczepanski pitched the ninth, after yielding a leadoff hit, chalked up two punchouts before inducing a foulout to senior catcher Sam Thompson to secure the Victory for MSU.
"Our pitchers did a great job today," Boss said. "Joseph settled into the game really nice, and Nolan Higgins got a huge strikeout when he needed it. Logan Pikur did a nice job in his inning of work, getting a double-play ball, and Tommy Szczepanski came in to close it out with two big strikeouts."
Senior outfielder Jack Frank finished 3-for-3 with a run scored, while C.Williams was 2-for-3 with the two ribbies and scored a run. Seymour and junior infielder Sam Busch were both 2-for-4, with Busch driving in a run, while senior infielder Dillon Kark was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
"It a good wins for our guys. I thought we played pretty well all the way around. I think Western Michigan is a good team, and the Miller kid on the mound is really, really good. He's capable of beating anybody in the country," Boss said. "We're pleased with this one and will get ready to go for a pretty good Western Carolina team tomorrow."
