EAST LANSING, Mich. – 16th-ranked men's tennis completed a 7-0 sweep of No. 62 Indiana on senior day at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Center Sunday, dominating six of the matches in straight sets.
The win extends MSU's winningest season in program-history set the day prior against Purdue, as the Spartans now sit at 20-3 on the season. Now 6-0 in the Big Ten, second-year head coach Harry Jadun's squad also continued its best start to conference play since 1967.
The Spartans sit in a three-way tie atop the Big Ten standings, shared with Ohio State and Michigan, who they are both yet to face. MSU takes on national No. 1 Ohio State on the road on Saturday, April 13.
In a weekend in which the five graduating seniors – Luke Baylis, Sebastien Collard, Reed Crocker, Ronald Hohmann III and Graydon Lair – were honored, each found success on the home courts. Collard, Hohmann and Lair all won singles matches Sunday while Crocker and Baylis prevailed in their opportunities on Saturday.
Head Coach Harry Jadun
"Great senior day for the guys. Any time you can sweep a Big Ten team is really, really cool. It really shows how far this program has come since when Graydon and Luke were freshmen, we definitely lost to Indiana, and now we're 6-0 in the Big Ten. Credit to those four-year guys that have really turned this program around. For Graydon to get the clinch today was special as a senior and I think every senior from Sebastien to Ronnie, Graydon and Reed and Luke yesterday, were major parts in the big weekend."
Match Recap
The day began with an Indiana win at No. 2 doubles, but that would be the only set the Hoosiers would claim in the next ten frames. The Spartans first responded with a 6-2 win from Lair and freshman Aristotelis Thanos on court three. On the feature court, MSU's No. 5 nationally-ranked duo of junior Max Sheldon and sophomore Ozan Baris combined for a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
In singles the Spartans rattled off wins in all six first sets with Collard making rapid work of his opponent, 6-0, 6-1 to quickly increase the Spartan advantage to two. Sheldon followed soon after, winning 6-2, 6-1 for his team-leading 13th win of the season.
Lair's 6-4, 6-1 win on court six clinched the victory for MSU and a 7-1 individual record on the season. Sophomore David Saye followed, 6-4, 6-2. And then Thanos, who on his birthday clinched his eleventh consecutive win and moved to 11-1 in his freshman season with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court two.
Hohmann rounded things out and completed the Spartans' second Big Ten 7-0 sweep of the season with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 three-setter on main court.
