East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State junior women's golfer Katie Lu was named an honorable mention All-American by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) on Friday afternoon.
Lu helped lead the Spartans to an NCAA Championships appearance this year, the third in the last four years and the 14th under Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.
Lu is the ninth golfer to earn All-American honors and this is the 15th All-American for a Spartan under Slobodnik-Stoll. She is the first MSU player to earn All-American honors since Allyson Geer-Park and Valery Plata earned honorable mention honors from the WGCA in 2020.
"This is a great honor for Katie and so well deserving for her after the tremendous season she had for our team," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "Katie has worked very hard since she came to Michigan State to be the best, not only on the golf course but in the classroom. She has become one of the best golfers in the Big Ten and in the country while carrying a 3.9 grade-point average. She's the epitome of a Spartan and what we expect in our program."
An All-Big Ten Conference First Team selection, Lu was the team's top finisher seven times this year as the Spartans won one team event, posted three runner-up finishes and were among the top-five in eight different tournaments.
Lu led the way, posting not only personal best numbers, but some of the best in program history.
Lu, a who carries a 3.931 cumulative grade-point average in the Broad College of Business, led the team in scoring this season at 71.54, a career best mark that also ranks No. 2 all-time for a single season at Michigan State, just behind the record of 70.68 set by Sarah Burnham in 2017-18.
She will enter her senior year in 2024-25 ranked No. 4 all-time at Michigan State with a 73.55 scoring average.
This year, Lu won two events, shooting a 3-under par 213 to win the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sept. 18 and then carding a 5-under par 211 to share medalist honors with classmate Brooke Biermann at the Briar's Creek event on March 12. Lu is one of 12 MSU players to win two events in one season and was the first player since Burnham won two in 2015-16.
Lu finished among the top-5 in four events, the top-10 seven times and the top-20 11 times in the 13 events she played in during the season.
While the Spartans fell just short of advancing to the final round of team stroke play at the NCAA Championships in mid-May, Lu advanced to play in the fourth round as one of the top individuals. It was the second-straight year that Lu qualified to play as an individual, becoming the first player in MSU history to do so in 2023. She tied for 45th place at 10-over par 298 this year.
