EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wide receiver Nick Marsh has been named the Shaun Alexander National Freshman Player of the Week after helping lead MSU to a 27-24 victory last Saturday at Maryland.
Each week during the 2024 season, the Maxwell Football Club will recognize an outstanding performance by a college freshman with the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week award.
Marsh caught eight passes for 194 yards – the 10th-highest single-game total in Spartan history – in the win over the Terrapins. It also marked the second-most receiving yards in a game by a Spartan freshman.
With MSU trailing 24-17 with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles connected with Marsh on a 77-yard touchdown pass that tied the game. It was MSU's longest TD reception since Jayden Reed had an 85-yard touchdown catch vs. Youngstown State on Sept. 11, 2021.
In the fourth quarter alone, Marsh had four receptions for 151 yards. In addition to the 77-yard TD, Marsh had a 57-yard catch earlier in the quarter, and receptions for 11 and 6 yards on MSU's game-winning drive that culminated with Jonathan Kim's 37-yard field goal with one-second remaining that put MSU on top, 27-24.
Marsh was also named the 247Sports True Freshman of the Week and the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his impressive showing at Maryland. He currently ranks third in the Big Ten with 102.5 receiving yards per game (nine catches for 205 yards), and is third among FBS freshmen in receiving yards per game.
Marsh was one of 37 players represented on the Shaun Alexander Award Hot 37 preseason watch list.
