EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Tournament of Roses announced on Wednesday that former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio, the winningest coach in school history, has been named to the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
Dantonio will be the third Spartan inducted in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, joining All-America running back Lorenzo White, who led MSU to a win in the 1988 Rose Bowl over USC, and Dave Kaiser, who kicked a game-winning 41-yard field goal in the final seconds of the 1956 Rose Bowl over UCLA.
Dantonio and the Spartans won the 100th Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, 2014, with a 24-20 win over No. 5 Stanford. Michigan State won a school-record 13 games, finished No. 3 in the national polls, and claimed the school's eighth Big Ten Championship during the 2013 season that culminated with the victory over the Cardinal in Pasadena.
Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush from USC and All-America running back LaMichael James from Oregon will join Dantonio as part of the 2024 Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Class. This year's Rose Bowl Hall of Fame inductees will be honored in the 136th Rose Parade presented by Honda and on the field during the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential on Jan. 1, 2025. The inductees will also be recognized in a private ceremony held by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses on Dec. 31.
The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame was established in 1989 to pay tribute to individuals who have contributed to the history and excitement of the Rose Bowl Game, and those who embody the highest level of passion, strength, tradition, and honor associated with The Granddaddy of Them All®.
With the addition of this year's class, the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame includes 146 inductees over its 35-year history. Inductees are honored with a permanent plaque that includes their name and year of induction at The Court of Champions at the Rose Bowl Stadium, forever cementing their legacy with that of The Granddaddy of Them All.
Dantonio was also elected to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024 and will be officially inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame's 66th Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 10, 2024, at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The inductees will also be recognized at their respective collegiate institutions with NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, presented by Fidelity Investments, during the 2024 season. Dantonio's On-Campus Salute is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 vs. Ohio State, where he will officially join the Spartan Stadium Ring of Fame.
Dantonio finished his career with a record of 114-57 (.667) in East Lansing and 132-74 (.641) in 16 seasons overall (2004-19). During his time at the helm of the Spartan program from 2007-19, Dantonio compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including three Big Ten Championships (2010, 2013, 2015), two victories in the Big Ten Championship Game (2013, 2015), victories in the 2014 Rose Bowl and the 2015 Cotton Bowl, and an appearance in the 2015 College Football Playoff.
A two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2010, 2013), Dantonio led Michigan State to Top 25 finishes seven times (2008: No. 24 in both polls; 2010: No. 14 in both polls; 2011: No. 10 USA TODAY/No. 11 AP; 2013: No. 3 in both polls; 2014: No. 5 in both polls; 2015: No. 6 in both polls; 2017: No. 15 AP/No. 16 USA TODAY). Dantonio's seven AP Top-25 finishes tied for first in school history (Duffy Daugherty's teams posted seven Top-25 finishes during his 19-year tenure from 1954-72). MSU was the only school to finish in the top-six of the national polls from 2013-15 (No. 3 in 2013, No. 5 in 2014, No. 6 in 2015) and the 36 wins from 2013-15 marked the winningest three-year stretch in the history of the program.
