EAST LANSING, Mich. – It was a tale of two halves on Sunday afternoon inside Jenison Field House as Michigan State wrestling bounced back to defeat Buffalo, 25-13. The Spartans trailed 13-3 through the first five bouts before responding with five straight victories to earn their first home dual win of the season.
MSU improves to 3-3 in duals and is 3-1 in non-conference action. The Spartans are back inside historic Jenison Field House next weekend when they host No. 25-ranked Indiana at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, and No. 7-ranked Nebraska at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26.
Sunday's dual started at 149 pounds and opened with a string of three consecutive Buffalo decisions that also included wins at 157 and 165 pounds.
With the Spartans trailing 9-0, redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza gutted out an 11-10 decision at 174 pounds. Garza, who entered the rankings this week at No. 31 (FloWrestling), lead 7-2 after a second period escape, but a pair of Buffalo takedowns tied the bout at 8-8 heading into the third. With just over a minute left to wrestle in the final period, Garza secured the eventual winning takedown on the edge of the mat.
A major decision from Buffalo's Marcus Petite led to MSU trailing 13-3 at intermission.
Who better than redshirt freshman Remy Cotton to get Michigan State going out of the break, however. The No. 23-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, Cotton led 14-2 over his opponent before locking in the fall at 4:50 in the match.
Bonus points kept coming for the Spartans at heavyweight where redshirt freshman Max Vanadia scored a 20-4 tech fall over Robert Unruh in the second period. Vanadia led 13-3 through one before earning an escape and two more takedowns to wrap the bout up early. At 125, redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand and Max Elton traded escapes with the bout tied 1-1 in the third, but Buffalo's Elton was tagged for stalling late to give Weiand the 2-1 victory.
Michigan State continued to collect bonus points at 133 and 141. Redshirt junior Andy Hampton rode out the entire second period at 133 to lead 1-0 with 2:00 of riding time over Michel Giugliano. Hampton locked in a cradle along with two near-fall in the final 30 seconds of the match to earn a major decision, his first bonus point victory of the season.
At 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Jaden Crumpler took a 3-0 lead into the second period following a takedown in the closing moments of the first. Crumpler started the second on top, quickly looking for and securing a full set of back points to lead 7-0. An escape from each wrestler and riding time helped Crumpler improve to 3-3 in duals this season, earning his first major decision of the season.
