This Week In Spartan Athletics – January 2
Here's a look at the week ahead (January 2-5) for Michigan State Athletics:
Hockey
No. 1 Michigan State hosts Wisconsin at Munn Ice Arena on Thursday night (6:30 p.m.) before traveling to Chicago to take on the Badgers Saturday at Wrigley Field as part of the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series. MSU staged the first modern-day outdoor game on Oct. 6, 2001, at Spartan Stadium. Saturday's game will be the sixth outdoor game in program history and the first since 2015 at Soldier Field in Chicago. At 15-2-1, MSU is off to its best start since 2000-01. The Spartans and the Badgers split a December series in Madison.
Men's Basketball
After wrapping up the non-conference portion of the schedule with a Monday win over Western Michigan, No. 18/15 Michigan State returns to Big Ten play with a Friday night contest at Ohio State. MSU is one of three Big Ten schools to open conference action with a 2-0 mark, while OSU is 1-1, including a 14-point home win over Rutgers. Ohio State's slate includes wins over No. 19 Texas and No. 4 Kentucky. This is the only match-up of the season between the Spartans and Buckeyes.
Women's Gymnastics
No. 11 Michigan State opens its 2025 season Saturday at home against Western Michigan (4 p.m.). It's also the B1G Championship Celebration as fans will have photo opportunities with the 2024 Big Ten trophies and receive commemorative championship confetti (while supplies last). In December, MSU claimed the top spot in the 2025 Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll.
