EAST LANSING, Mich. – True freshman Mason Stewart earned his first career dual victory in his first dual appearance on Sunday afternoon as Michigan State wrestling fell to No. 7-ranked Nebraska, 38-3 inside historic Jenison Field House.
MSU moves to 3-5 in duals along with an 0-4 mark in the Big Ten, while Nebraska improves to 8-2 overall (3-1 B1G). Michigan State's next opportunity comes on Sunday, February 2 when Clarion comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. dual. Next Sunday will also be MSU's Senior Celebration presented by HAP where the Spartans will honoring their graduating seniors.
Nebraska took the first four bouts of the afternoon starting at 125, but it wasn't without a handful of bright spots from Michigan State's wrestlers. Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand made it an 8-6 bout against No. 7-ranked Caleb Smith at 125 late in the third period with a duck under takedown, and redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III scored a double-leg takedown near the edge of the mat against No. 2-ranked Ridge Lovett before falling by pin in the second period.
Stewart stole the show for the Spartans at 157, making his collegiate dual debut against Scott Robertson. Stewart secured a pair of takedowns in regulation and went into sudden victory knotted up at 10-10. Just 10 seconds into the extra time Stewart got in on shot to secure the 13-10 decision.
Nebraska earned decision victories at 165 and 174, before earning bonus point wins at 184, 197 and heavyweight to conclude the dual.
