EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State offensive guard Luke Newman, who lettered for the Spartans in 2024 after transferring from Holy Cross, will play in the 100th East-West Shrine Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 30 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game will start at 8 p.m. and will be televised on the NFL Network.
Newman, who is on the West roster, has been competing in practices this week in front of NFL personnel in preparation for the game.
A native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Newman played in 52 collegiate games over the course of five seasons, including 40 at Holy Cross from 2020-23 and all 12 at MSU in 2024. He started 37 consecutive games at left tackle for the Crusaders, then started all 12 games at left guard for the Spartans this past season while leading the team with 739 offensive snaps. He was graded the No. 9 offensive guard in the Big Ten by Pro Football Focus during the regular season and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades by both the coaches and media.
During his time at Holy Cross, Newman was a two-time FCS All-American (2023: Associated Press, AFCA and Stats Perform Second Team; 2022: Associated Press and Stats Perform First Team) and a three-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from Holy Cross in 2024.
Last month, the East-West Shrine Bowl announced its All-Century Team in celebration of the upcoming 100th edition of the oldest college football all-star game in the nation. The list featured three Spartans: halfback Herb Adderley, offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure and wide receiver Andre Rison.
A total of 104 Spartans have participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl over the past 100 years, which originated in San Francisco in 1925 and was played there until 2005; the game has also been played in San Antonio (2006), Houston (2007-09), Orlando (2010-11), St. Petersburg (2012-22), Las Vegas (2023) and Frisco, Texas (2024). In addition, three former Spartan head coaches served as the head coach in the game, including Biggie Munn (1952-53), Duffy Daugherty (1958, 1959, 1966, 1968) and George Perles (1988). Darryl Rogers was an assistant coach in 1980.
Since 1925, the East-West Shrine Bowl has benefited Shriners Children's and its mission to provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families' ability to pay or insurance status.
