East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) wrapped up his IIHF U20 World Junior Championship career on Sunday evening in Ottawa, capturing a second consecutive gold medal between the pipes with Team USA.
The Americans captured the 2025 gold with an overtime victory over Finland, overcoming a 3-1 deficit en route to the first back-to-back gold medals in Team USA history at this event. Augustine was one of 10 athletes on both 2024 and 2025 gold medal winning squads. He compiled a .917 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average in this year's tournament, appearing in five of Team USA's seven games.
Augustine is one of, if not the most, decorated up-and-coming American prospects. With a win against Czechia in the semifinals, Augustine became the winningest goaltender in team USA history at the IIHF World Junior Championship with 11 wins, surpassing the previous record of ten held by Jack Campbell. He was a three-time U20 World Junior Championship participant, earning a bronze medal in his first appearance in 2023 before the back-to-back golds, and has both a silver (2022) and gold medal (2023) at the U18 Worlds prior to enrolling at MSU. Last spring, he made his first men's senior World Championship squad, playing four games with a roster primarily made up of NHL players.
Augustine backstopped MSU to Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles a year ago as a freshman, and for the second consecutive season is the youngest starting goaltender in Division I hockey. Prior to his departure for World Juniors, he compiled an 11-2-1 record with a 1.98 GAA and .930 save percentage for the Spartans, who are ranked No. 1 in both national polls and are currently tied for first place in the Big Ten standings. He was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft (41st overall) by the Detroit Red Wings.
Augustine returns to East Lansing to resume the Spartans' season. MSU, currently 17-2-1, has a series at Penn State on Jan. 10-11.
