Zac Kelly earns his fifth shutout of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Spartan men's soccer battled to a 0-0 draw against UCLA Monday on a chilly late night at DeMartin Stadium.
With the tie, Michigan State stands to 5-6-2 this season and 2-4-2 in Big Ten action. UCLA is 3-6-4 overall record and is 3-3-2 in league play. The Spartans have been shutout in their last three contests.
"It was defensive in the score line, but I don't know if it was a defensive game," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "There were plenty of chances to be had in that game. I mean they cleared a couple of shots off the line. I thought we were dangerous, I thought we got into a lot of good spots, both in the first and second half, but we didn't see the ball go in the net."
One of the Spartans' best chances came with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game. Freshman forward Chim Okeke took a deep pass and his shot with time elapsing was saved by UCLA netminder Kevin Box.
In the first half, the Michigan State offense starting getting going in the 29th minute when freshman midfielder Luke Spadafora's shot was blocked. Senior forward Jack Guggemos followed with a shot on goal in the 29th minute.
"I thought the defense was very good. I thought (Zac) Kelly's air game was spot on," Rensing said. "I thought he came off of his back line very well which is probably why he didn't have any saves to make for the game. That was good, he did everything that you would want out of a keeper. He's big time."
Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Zac Kelly captured his fifth shutout of the season and the 17th for his MSU career, which is eighth in the Spartan record book.
Michigan State out-shot the Bruins 10-8, including 4-0 in shots on goal. The Spartans had five corner kicks to the Bruins four.
Michigan State will celebrate seniors Zac Kelly, Josh Adam, Josh Mason, Michael Sly, Jr., Ryan Van De Winkle, Jack Guggemos and Jake Spadafora on Senior Day Sunday, on Oct. 26 against Kansas City at 1 p.m.
