EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Kansas City on Sunday at DeMartin Stadium to complete non-conference action.
Following the game, the Spartans honored seniors Zac Kelly, Josh Adam, Josh Mason, Michael Sly, Jr., Ryan Van De Winkle, Jack Guggemos and Jake Spadafora following the game. All seven seniors were able to see time on the pitch on Sunday. MSU also honored alumni from several decades at half time.
With the loss, Michigan State falls to 5-7-2 this season. Kansas City is 3-6-4 overall record and is 3-3-2 in league play. The Spartans have been shutout in their last four contests.
"I thought we played pretty well. We grew into the game in the first half, I would say. It was a little bit of a slow start," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought we really were pretty good in the last 20 minutes and started to create some danger and chances. And I think right now, we just need a little luck. And then, obviously, we don't want to give up the restart and the own goal. KC is a very good team; they're a NCAA tournament caliber team. But I think it was more on us, and I think things that we can correct."
The teams both fought for possession early on. Junior midfielder Miles Merritt earned the Spartans' first shot on goal in the 29th minute. Before the first half ended freshman midfielder Luke Spadafora had another shot on goal in the 44th minute, but through the first 45 minutes there was no score.
The Spartans out-shot the Roos 5-4 in the first half.
In the second half, Kansas City came out as the aggressor. In the 50th minute, the Roos finally broke through. Timothy Ospina started the action with a perfectly placed corner kick that found the foot of Raphael Kistmann to give KC the 1-0 lead.
Michigan State struggled to find the equalizer and in the 62nd minute, KC made it 2-0 after an MSU own goal.
Kansas City ended the game out-shooting MSU 10-8 and had a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
"They've all been completely committed to the program," Rensing said of the senior class. "They're great kids. When you graduate a senior, you may worry about what's next in life for them. I don't have any concerns about those seven guys. They're very good people. They're hard workers. They're smart kids, and they're going to be just fine and just want to thank them and their parents for the four to five years that they've get us."
Michigan State will return to Big Ten play on Friday, Oct. 31, traveling to Rutgers at 7 p.m.
