
Four in Double Figures Guides Spartans Past Michigan Tech in Exhibition Action

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball opened the 2025-26 season a strong 101-58 exhibition win Wednesday night at the Breslin Center.
The game was a reunion of sorts as associate head coach Kim Cameron and assistant coach Maria Kasza both are both alums of Michigan Tech. Cameron went on to be the head coach with Kasza serving as an assistant.
Senior forward Grace VanSlooten led the Spartans with 22 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Emma Shumate came off the bench to score 20 points going 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Senior guard Theryn Hallock added 16 points with five assists, while redshirt-sophomore guard Kennedy Blair made her first start and added 14 points.
The Huskies were led by 15 points from Kendall Standfest.
Hallock scored the first eight points for the Spartans with Blair adding two as MSU started on a 10-0 run, leading to a MTU timeout. Michigan State went on to score the first 20 points of the game. The streak was ended by a three-point play from Standfast. MSU used a 9-0 run over 48 seconds to take a 37-6 lead. The Spartans shot 55.0 percent in the first quarter to lead 38-6 at the break.
In the second quarter, Shumate hit three-straight threes to up the advantage to 51-9. The senior ended the period going 4-for-4 from long range. Blair ended the quarter with seven points. Michigan State shot a phenomenal 62.5 percent from the field in the second quarter to lead 65-21 at the break.
The Huskies came to life in the third quarter, out-scoring the Spartans 18-15. Ten of Michigan State's 15 points in the quarter came in the paint. VanSlooten led the way with seven points. Michigan Tech was led once again by six points from Standfest. The period ended with MSU on top 80-39.
In the fourth quarter, Shumate continued her long-range shooting, hitting her sixth of the game at the 7:48 mark to give MSU the 87-42 lead. The Spartans emptied the bench with 12 of the 15 MSU players on the roster seeing action.
Michigan State will open the regular season against Mercyhurst on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

• All 12 players available of the 15 players on Michigan State's roster saw action . . . 10 of the 12 Spartans played 10:00 or more minutes, with four playing 20:00 or more.
• Of the 12 Spartans that played, 10 of the 12 scored, including six with seven or more points and four in double-figures . . . 11 of the 12 players pulled down at least one rebound, including five players with five or more along with three with eight or more and one in double-digits.
• Senior forward Marah Dykstra, junior guard Rashunda Jones, senior guard Jalyn Brown, along with the freshman guard trio of Amy Terrian, Jordan Ode and Anna Terrian all made their unofficial Spartan debuts as they are all in their first seasons for the Green & White.
• Redshirt-junior forward Isaline Alexander returned to action for the first time since the 2022-23 season, since missing the entire 2023-24 season with an injury . . . Alexander came off the bench to play 15 minutes, and was second on the team with nine rebounds, and tallied four points, adding one block and one assist.
• Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch and returning second-team All-B1G senior forward Grace VanSlooten netted a game-high 22 points, along with eight rebounds and three assists . . . VanSlooten ended with a game-best +/- of +41.
• Senior guard Emma Shumate came off the bench to net 20 points, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, adding one field goal inside the arc . . . Shumate made three-straight 3-pointers on three-consecutive possessions during the second quarter, as MSU boosted its lead from 42-9 to 51-9 in less than a minute, as she hit the first one at 7:47, the second at 7:19 and the third at 6:54 and they were all from nearly the same spot on the floor.

• Redshirt-sophomore guard Kennedy Blair was the fourth Spartan in double-figures, finishing with 14 points, which all came in the first half . . . Blair also pulled down six rebounds, swiped one steal and dished out one assist.
• Junior guard Rashunda Jones tallied eight points and dished out a game-high seven assists, adding two steals and two rebounds . . . freshman guards Amy and Anna Terrian both netted a 3-pointer each for their scoring on the night.
• MSU shot 57.9 percent (22-of-38) from the field in the first half, including 53.3 percent (8-of-15) behind the arc, on the way to opening a 65-21 halftime scored . . . the Spartans had 38-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Hallock single-handedly out-scoring MTU, 13-8, while VanSlooten also out-scored them, 8-6.
• The Spartans led from start-to-finish making their first points just 11 seconds into the game on a pair of free throws by Hallock and led the remaining 39:49 of the game . . . Shumate's 20 points and senior guard Abbey Kimball's seven points off the bench, helped boost MSU to a 41-8 bench scoring advantage.
