EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 2025-26 Michigan State hockey season got underway on Friday night with MSU welcoming a sold-out crowd to Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena where the Spartans dispatched Windsor, 4-0, in exhibition action.
"The guys have done a great job at working, and the reality is we've practiced quite a bit, and they wanted to get out there hungry to play," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "There's portions of the game I really liked about our team, and I thought in the second period we got to our game."
Michigan State took a 1-0 lead just seconds into the contest when freshman Porter Martone collected a pass from senior Daniel Russell in front of the net, scoring his first goal in front of the Munn faithful.
MSU's advantage quickly increased to 4-0 in the second period off goals from junior Tommi Mannisto, senior Charlie Stramel and freshman Ryker Lee. Mannisto scored a one-timer off a cross-ice pass by senior Tiernan Shoudy with 12:54 to play, and Stramel re-directed a shot sent in from the blueline by junior Maxim Strbak just 35 seconds later.
Lee dazzled the crowd with 6:50 left in the second, maneuvering past his defender with ease to get a clean look on goal before striking one past Windsor goaltender Max Donoso.
Michigan State's best chance on goal of the third period came with 6:00 remaining in regulation when freshman Cayden Lindstrom forced a turnover at center-ice before taking the puck one-on-one with Donoso. Lindstrom's shot caromed off the left post but didn't fail to get the crowd out of its seat.
Russel led the Spartans with two assists on Friday night, while Martone joined him with a pair of points on a goal and assist. Strbak, Shoudy, Martone and junior Griffin Jurecki all had one assist apiece.
Junior Trey Augustine and freshman Melvin Strahl combined for the shutout in goal making 23 total saves. Strahl led the way with 15 including 11 in the third period alone. Junior defenseman Patrick Geary led all Spartans with a +3 +/-. Six Spartans blocked shots, including Geary, Lindstrom, Tier. Shoudy, senior Travis Shoudy and senior Matt Basgall.
