
MSU Women’s Tennis Slates Victories in Michigan State Classic Opening Day

Spartans tally three victories to kick off first home fall tournament.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis kicked off a weekend full of action at the Michigan State Classic presented by Auto Owner's Insurance with sweeping victories Friday, taking advantage of the warm, sunny weather at the MSU Outdoor Courts.
In a set of doubles matches, senior Issey Purser and freshman Nina Plihal were victorious against Western Michigan's Sienna Osborne/Jiang Xingtong, 6-3.
During the second set of doubles action, the Spartan pair faced off against Big Ten foes from Michigan, Laura Maser/Gabriella Vanessa Lindgren. While the Spartan pair put up a valiant fight, they ultimately fell, 6-1.
Singles matches began in the afternoon portion of action, with four players gearing up in the Green & White.
Senior Sarah Fazlagic and redshirt-junior Hanna Tsitavets were first to take to the courts, playing on courts 1 and 3.
Fazlagic put up a competitive battle but ultimately fell to Roberta Sechi of DePaul, 6-3, 6-4.
Following in suit was Tsitavets, who also dropped her match in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat against Hannah Smith of DePaul.
Later in the day, Plihal and Purser returned to the courts for competitive matches against DePaul opponents.
In her Spartan singles debut, Plihal had a victorious match against Helin Alvarez, securing a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Finishing up the first day of the tournament, Purser's match against Clara Nilsson came down to the last serve. Purser took the first set of the match 6-1, dominating the court. During the second set, Purser split the match, falling to the DePaul player, 6-3. In the third and final set of play, Purser and Nilsson came to a 6-6 tie, where a tie break was the final decider of the match.
With her match on the line, Purser prevailed in the tiebreaker and emerged with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) victory against Nilsson, securing a win in the final match of the day.
Play continues Saturday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the MSU Outdoor Rec Tennis Center.
