Spartan Women’s Tennis Continues Michigan State Classic Action In Testing Fashion Saturday

MSU battles through second day of play in home tournament.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis wrapped up their second day of home tournament play in the Michigan State Classic presented by Auto Owner's Insurance, in a battling fashion, putting up demanding performances on the MSU Outdoor Rec Tennis Courts.
Three Spartans were involved in Saturday's action, senior Sarah Fazlagic, freshman Nina Plihal and senior Issey Purser.
Doubles matches began play with Fazlagic/Plihal taking court 1. The tandem faced off against DePaul's Helin Alvarez/Sasha Sakura Stula. While the MSU pair put up a great effort, they ultimately dropped the match, 6-3.
During the second round of doubles, Purser stepped up to replace Plihal as Fazlagic's doubles partner. In a match against Western Michigan's Sienna Osborne/Ayana Yaguchi, the Green & White held the lead for most of the game.
WMU was able to tie the Spartans, 4-4, ultimately overtaking the Fazlagic/Purser duo 6-4.
Singles action kicked off at 1 p.m. with all three Spartans repping the Green & White.
Fazlagic's match was the first to conclude, dropping her match against Marielou Badouin of Western Michigan 6-4, 6-2.
Purser's match was another close contest, competing in all three sets against Yasemin Pehlivan of DePaul. After coming back and splitting the match, Purser fell in a 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 defeat.
Freshman Nina Plihal competed in her first rivalry match against Michigan's Ava Bruno, marking her first match against a Big Ten opponent. In an extensive contest, Plihal dropped the match in a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-1.
The Spartans return to the courts for the final day of the Michigan State Classic presented by Auto Owner's Insurance on Sunday, with action slated for a 10 a.m. start.
