This Week In Spartan Athletics – October 7
Here's a look at the week ahead (October 7-13) for Michigan State Athletics:
Volleyball
After splitting a pair of road matches last weekend, Spartan volleyball is back at Breslin Center to host two Big Ten opponents. Friday night, MSU hosts Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the Spartans and Indiana square off at 1 p.m.
Football
Michigan State hosts UCLA for the first time since 1973, as the Bruins pay a trip to East Lansing for Homecoming. This will be the first meeting between the Spartans and Bruins as Big Ten opponents. In fact, it's the first meeting since 1974. MSU is a perfect 3-0 at Spartan Stadium this fall but has not played at home since Sept. 13.
Men's Tennis
Members of the Michigan State men's tennis team will participate in the Lexington M15 in Lexington, Kentucky. The competition began Monday and runs through Sunday.
Hockey
No. 2 Michigan State opens the regular season with a Thursday-Friday series against New Hampshire. Puck drop is 7 p.m. on Thursday and 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Women's Soccer
The Spartans are on the road for a pair of contests this week. Thursday, Michigan State travels to Ann Arbor for the yearly meeting with rival Michigan. Sunday, MSU is at a ranked Iowa squad. The Spartans enter the week just two points out of first place in the Big Ten standings.
Men's Soccer
Michigan State travels to Northwestern for its lone game of the week. Saturday night, the Spartans will face the Wildcats in Evanston. Last Friday, 4,681 fans attended MSU's contest vs. Penn State, marking the second-highest attended game in DeMartin Stadium history.
Women's Tennis
Members of the women's tennis team will be competing at the Wolverine Invitational Friday-Sunday in Ann Arbor. The Spartans had a strong showing last weekend at the Michigan State Classic presented by Auto-Owner's Insurance.
Field Hockey
Michigan State steps out of Big Ten play this weekend when it hosts Appalachian State Sunday at noon at Ralph Young Field.
Softball
Michigan State closes out its six-game fall schedule with a Sunday contest vs. Ferris State. The Spartans will host the Bulldogs at 3 p.m. at Secchia Stadium.
Men's and Women's Golf
Both the Michigan State men's and women's golf teams will travel to Scotland to compete in a tournament at the one of the game's iconic courses. The St. Andrews Links Collegiate runs Oct. 13-15 at the St. Andrews Golf Club.
