EAST LANSING, Mich. – Junior goaltender Trey Augustine and senior forward Charlie Stramel have earned First and Third Star of the Week honors as announced by the Big Ten on Tuesday morning. It's the third First Star honor of Augustine's career and his sixth weekly honor overall, while Stramel earns his fourth weekly accolade.
The two helped lead Michigan State to a pair of wins over then No. 3-ranked Penn State last weekend, winning 2-1 in overtime on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday to earn five of a possible six conference standings points.
Augustine held the Nittany Lions to just one goal over the weekend, stopping 60-of-61 shots he faced against the nation's sixth-best scoring offense and helped MSU go a perfect 9-for-9 on the penalty kill. Augustine's 0.49 goals against average and .984 save percentage over the weekend led all goaltenders in the NCAA. He posted a season-best 36 saves in game to earn his ninth career shutout.
Stramel turned in a career-best four-point effort in MSU's 5-0 win on Saturday, scoring the eventual game-winning goal just 2:32 into the opening period before later scoring on an empty net and assisting on goals by freshman Porter Martone and sophomore Colin Ralph. Stramel won .648 percent of his faceoffs in the series, finishing the weekend with a +4 rating.
The pair become Michigan State's third and fourth players to earn a Big Ten weekly accolade this season joining senior Matt Basgall (Third Star, 10/21) and junior Tommi Mannisto (First Star, 10/28).
