Senior Ozan Baris moves on, while sophomore Matthew Forbes closes out a hard-fought three-day run
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis closed day three of competition with senior Ozan Baris powering into the NCAA Individual Championships quarterfinals for the third-consecutive year, while sophomore Matthew Forbes concluded his campaign.
Baris took control of his match over Ilia Snitari from UNLV early, earning a straight-set 6-4, 7-6 to advance in the bracket towards the Elite Eight. One day after earning his fourth All-American accolade to extend his school-record streak, Baris continues to rewrite the MSU men's tennis record book by heading to the quarterfinals for the third year in a row.Â
Baris reached the semifinals as a sophomore in 2023-24, then made it all the way to the national finals last year. Baris continues his hunt for another deep tournament run, and is paired against Columbia's Michael Zheng in the quarterfinals, in a rematch of last year's National Championship match won by Zheng in a hard-fought, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, clash.
The Baris-Zhang battle is slated for Friday, November 21, at approximately 10 a.m. ET.
Forbes battled through three days of tough competition against the top talent from across the country. In the round of 16, Forbes, the No. 4 seed, took the court against Michigan's Max Dahlin in a thrilling three-set match. After dropping the first set, Forbes managed to come back and take the second set to force a third, which represented the tightly contested match by going to a third-set tiebreaker, before Forbes fell just short in a 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7) contest.Â
