The Starting XIÂ
What you need to know about Spartan women's soccer
•  Michigan State is a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship, and hosts No. 3 seed Colorado in Sunday's third round at DeMartin Stadium.Â
•  Michigan State and Colorado will meet for the second time this season.  MSU played to a 1-1 tie on the road in the season opener for both teams.  Hope Leyba opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Kennedy Bell got the equalizer in the 51st.  MSU outshot the Buffaloes 20-9 (5-3 on goal) and had 14 corners to Colorado's two.  Noelle Henning made two saves in her collegiate debut, and Jordan Nyles made four stops for CU. Â
•  The Spartans are 14-3-6 on the season and advanced to the third round with a 1-0 win over Wake Forest on Thursday.  Kayla Briggs had the goal in the 69th minute to halt the scoreless draw.  Noelle Henning made three saves in the shutout win, her eighth.  Colorado advanced with a 4-1 victory over Xavier.Â
•  With a third consecutive trip to the Sweet 16, MSU is in exclusive company.  The only schools to make it into the third round in 2023, 2024, and 2025 are MSU, Stanford and North Carolina.  The Cardinal is the No. 1 seed in the same quad where MSU is the 2 seed, and North Carolina is in the Vanderbilt quad. Â
• Three teams on MSU's 2025 schedule are still alive in the NCAA Tournament field:  Big Ten foes Ohio State and Washington, and Colorado.  Â
•  MSU's unbeaten streak was extended to a season-best eight games (7-0-1) with Thursday's win over Wake Forest.  MSU has lost just one game since the start of the Conference season on Sept. 12 - on the road at Iowa (10/12).
•  With 53 goals through 23 games, MSU is first in the B1G in both total goals (eighth nationally) and scoring offense (2.30, 18th NCAA). The Spartans also lead the Big Ten in total points (148) and assists (42), points per game (6.43), and goal differential (+30).Â
•  The Spartans will play their 24th game of the season against Colorado – tying the most in a season in program history; the 2008 team also played 24 games.   This is also the latest home date for a women's soccer game in MSU history (Nov. 23).  It will be one day shy of the latest game overall in program history:  last year's Sweet 16 game vs. Duke was played on Nov. 24.Â
•  MSU boasts three of the Big Ten's top 10 point scorers: Kennedy Bell (28, 1st), Kayla Briggs (23, T-2nd), and Emerson Sargeant (19, T-8th).  Briggs has both of MSU's game-winning goals in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, and her 23 points (8g, 7a) is now tied for 25th all-time in a single season at MSU. Â
•  Emerson Sargeant has three of MSU's nine goals in five postseason games.  She had a goal vs. Milwaukee and both scores in a B1G semifinal win over UCLA - her second brace of the season.  Since the Sept. 25 game at Minnesota, she has eight goals and two assists, with points in eight of 13 games.  Â
•  Bell opened the NCAA tournament offense for the Spartans with a first-half score vs. Milwaukee, pushing her to 28 points on the season (11g, 6a).  She has surpassed Lauren DeBeau (11-4-26) as the highest-scoring player in the Hosler era and is tied for 13th all-time in a single season points at MSU.  Bell's 11 goals rank in a tie for 11th in MSU's all-time single-season records - tying for the most goals for a Spartan since DeBeau had 11 in 2022.  Â
