EAST LANSING, Mich. – Coming off a championship-winning weekend at the 59th Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich. last weekend, No. 3/3-ranked Michigan State hockey has swept the Big Ten Three Stars of the Week honors. Senior forward Charlie Stramel was named First Star of the week, junior goaltender Trey Augustine earned Second Star of the Week and freshman Anthony Romani is the Big Ten's Third Star of the Week.
The Spartans have now earned nine Big Ten Star of the Week honors this season. Augustine is making his third appearance this season, previously earning First Star honors on Nov. 18 and Nov. 11. It's his eighth career Big Ten weekly recognition. Stramel was previously named the Big Ten's Third Star of the Week on Nov. 11. Romani earns the first weekly accolade of his career.
Stramel was named Tournament MVP at the GLI, finishing the tournament with five points on four goals and an assist. He scored a pair of goals in MSU's wins over Ferris State and Michigan Tech. Stramel helped the Spartans dominate at the face-off dot all weekend, winning .605 percent of his face-offs (26-17), which was second to only senior Tiernan Shoudy's .743 percent (26-9).
Augustine was dominant in goal, playing all 120 minutes of action while posting a .946 save percentage on a 1.50 goals against average. In Monday's championship game, Augustine made 32 saves on 33 shots faced for a .970 save percentage. He helped the Spartans go 7-for-8 on the penalty kill for the tournament stopping eight power play shot attempts.
Thrust into an elevated role this past week, Romani was Michigan State's second-leading scorer on the weekend with four points. Romani scored and assisted on a goal in each game of the tournament and has now posted six points over his last three games entering the second half of the Big Ten schedule.
Augustine and Romani each joined Stramel on the GLI All-Tournament Team alongside junior defenseman Patrick Geary.
