2/16/2025 3:28:00 PM | Wrestling
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Over 1,500 fans braved snowy conditions on Sunday afternoon for the 117th all-time meeting between Michigan State and Michigan, where the No. 19-ranked Wolverines defeated MSU, 27-12, inside historic Jenison Field House. The Spartans won four bouts, opening the dual with back-to-back victories at 125 and 133 pounds to take an early lead.
Michigan State's record moves 4-9 overall along with an 0-8 record in Big Ten duals, while Michigan improves to 6-5 (3-5 B1G). The Spartans will conclude the regular season next week in Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a dual at Central Michigan on Friday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m.
The home crowd erupted early as MSU won decisions at 125 and 133 pounds. Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand scored a first period takedown on a slick super duck, racking up nearly two minutes of riding time in the contest to win 6-0.
Redshirt junior Andy Hampton kept the momentum going for MSU at 133 winning a 3-2 decision of Nolan Wertanen on a late takedown. After a failed Michigan challenge, Hampton used a third period body lock on the edge of the mat to take a 3-1 lead over Wertanen with 39 seconds remaining in the bout.
Michigan victories at 141 and 149 pounds provided the Wolverines with a slight 9-6 advantage in team score over the Spartans. At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III lost a narrow 4-1 decision to high school teammate No. 24-ranked Dylan Gilcher.
Redshirt sophomore Braden Stauffenberg tied the dual at 9-9 with a win at 157 pounds, winning a 6-1 decision over Zar Walker. Stauffenberg scored on a first period single leg before picking up a second period escape. Leading 4-1 going into the third, Stauffenberg rode out the entire period to earn a stall point and riding time.
The Wolverines broke the tie with a major decision at 165, but redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza quickly got Michigan State back on the board at 174. Garza went to sudden victory against Connor Owens tied at 1-1, but with 1:06 remaining used a back trip to score the three-point takedown. The win avenged a 4-1 sudden victory loss to Owens earlier this season at the Midlands Championships.
Michigan took the final three bouts of the afternoon winning by decision at 184, injury default at 197 and tech fall at heavyweight. The ranked bout between redshirt freshman Remy Cotton and Jacob Cardenas at 197 pounds had only just begun before inadvertent head contact forced Cotton to default from the match.
